Another heads up for the ebay sellers

I am copying this from another board.

"It turns out buyers can change the shipping costs if they don't like them. I currently have someone trying this on me. They paid their auction but only the bid price and gave themselves FREE shipping. I've refunded the money, re-sent the invoice and same thing. The buyer is claiming that they are doing nothing but pressing pay.

How this is even allowed is beyond me. It turns out though that Ebay has a setting for this that you have to turn off.. a setting for common sense.. lol .. under MY ACCOUNT go to SITE PREFERENCES then go to PAYMENT FROM BUYERS and click NO for "ALLOW BUYERS TO EDIT PAYMENT TOTALS"

I don't know how many of y'all were hip to this.

    Done. Thanks for the tip!
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

what a completely BS thing for sellers to have to go through. You'd think a setting like that would default to the buyer NOT being able to adjust shipping rates instead of the other way around.

I was aware that option was available, and I don't believe it is a new feature created by Ebay to further screw sellers. It is used to reflect discounts or additions to the S/H. As a buyer, it used to be convenient for me if the seller listed a multi-card discount in his listing. For instance, it his shipping was $3 plus .50 per additional card, if I bought 7 cards I could adjust the shipping myself without waiting for the seller to invoice me.

Although I have that option available on my own listings, I've yet to have a buyer try to alter it to free or reduced shipping. If he did, I just wouldn't ship his item until he paid.

    Thanks for the tipimage
  • is this feature still turned on if you allow buyers to combine shipping? Usually i tell folks to wait for an invoice if you buy multiple things. Its ridiculous that they can change the shipping terms and make it FREE lol.
  • Yeah, few years back I had this happen. I never look at what they pay but once I accidentally noticed shipping was a buck when it should have been 3 or whatever. I emailed them and re-invoiced. They never responded, just paid.

Thanks for sharing, unsure why I never did.

  • The guy giving himself free shipping seems like a real dickhead IMO.

There's a few sellers I deal with regularly that leave the option open for international buyers to add whatever the extra cost might be. So I'm thankful for the option when it saves me from having to request the actual shipping to my country.

This is a pretty well known "issue" and the easy solution
is to simply change the setting to prevent the buyer from
    changing the numbers.

BUT, many sellers like the current default. It, they think,
saves them the time needed to manually adjust the
invoice OR send an email message; the honest buyer
simply plugs in the correct number from the listing --- calculating
    his own "multiple item discount."

I changed the default years ago, tho it is no longer relevant to
the "free" shipping listings that I have used since 2006/07.

Thanks for the heads up. I just went in and changed the default.

While doing so, I noticed they had a section that reads:

"Please provide an address - opens in a new window or tab where payments can be mailed or where purchases can be picked up by buyers. This information is only displayed to buyers who pay with check or money order, or pay on pickup as a payment option."

Check? Money Order? How long has it been now?

I only recall one seller having the option to change the shipping that I have dealt with and I used it as it was a multiple item purchase and put in whatever it was that he had stated in his listing for additional shipping. Never once thought about using it in my favor.

Wait, so we can get dickhead through the filter, but if I happen to pr*ck my finger while preparing a package for shipment, that's not allowed? (don't ask me how I'd pr*ck my finger shipping cardboard - I just wanted to keep it board specific)
