William IV Halfpenny Grade In

I bought this 1837 a few months ago raw and finally got around to sending it in last month, just got the grade and the NGC image today.

Now I know you are thinking, so what - a 63 BN. But I am really pleased to get one to make that, it's only a pop 6/2 coin (best graded is a single 64 RB)and I have had a really difficult time finding a raw one that I thought would make uncirculated in any grade. The WIlliam IV halfpennies were only minted in 3 years, 1831, 1834 and 1837, and I had to look at a bunch of sliders and rough coins to finally find one maybe worth submitting.

Looks like a nice copper to me; even chocolate brown with maybe some irid. highlights.

FWIW, IMO NGC has recently tightened considerably in at least the Darkside arena, and it matters not the value of the given coin.

Very nice set! I am very impressed. I would like to create a page much like yours for my Russian Imperial collection. All of my collection is non certified and I am not a professional photographer so it ought to be interesting. Your pattern copper is amazing. I am attracted to it almost as much as the copper pieces of Paul I. But I need another collecting interest like I need another hole in my head.

Thanks guys, yes Mac, it has a very attractive pale blue irridescent tone to it.

And jump right in to building a page Nick, it's cheap and fairly easy. I use 1&1 Internet, it runs $3.99 per month and really has everything I need. Any of the really good images on my site were taken by another board member who does very good work, all the crappy photos are mine.

Do you think NGC are grading stricter on British coins nowadays?

I recently purchased a nice 1826 farthing MS62 and I would swear it looks nicer then a 62 in hand with nice green iridescent toning on the obverse.

I think in general they have become stricter over the past 12 months, in this case though I am ok with the grade. I had figured it for a 63, with an outside chance at 64 if the lighting was bad. If you look just to the right of Britannia there is a small are of marks that you can see in the image, that's what was going to keep it down to 63. The obverse is 1-2 points better in my estimation.

I have had a couple of others, like your farthing, that have just looked undergraded though. Even comparing to some early fatty slabbed coins it looked like they were 1-2 points lower.
