Here's an update. By 10 am on Tuesday, the 4 SC boyz had swept the floor clean of several dozen late 60's and 70's vending sets. Yes, I said Tuesday.

So if you're looking for cards, why bother?

I'm outta there, will my own semi-cool story later. Have a crab cake for me.

Tree - oh yeah, happens every year. I'd estimate half the people with dealer badges don't have booths.

Are they just piggybacking on someone else's booth to get early admittance so they can buy what they want first? Anyone doing that kind of stuff to get the Strasburg promos too?
  • Disappointing. I am going on Saturday. Hope there are still some pre-war reasonably priced.

The National is probably one of the few places where finding the deceased guys in the autographed 1969 basketball set is possible. I know it's a total longshot, but if anyone sees any of the following signed, please let me know

Gus Johnson, Jimmy Walker, Ron Williams, Guy Rogers, Howie Komives, Art Harris, Happy Hairston, Dave Debusschere and Herm Gilliam

Anyone else have any good National stories. I saw on the set registry board where board member 1954 said he picked up a nice '66 Topps BB set. Does 4SC have a crew of buyers??? I'm going next year but won't get there until Thursday or Friday. These horror stories have me doubting if the trip is worth it.

I attended my first "National" today -- it was an easy trip as I'm only about 15mi south of Baltimore.

My first thought was "Wow!". I make it to the Chantilly, VA show once or twice a year (which is a great local show) but it's nothing compared to this. I was originally hoping to track down a few board members but didn't have a lot of time and I wanted to get through as many tables as possible. I wandered around for about 2 hours -- had lunch -- then wandered for another 2 hours

The coolest thing for me was seeing so many rare cards -- highlighted by the T206 Honus Wagner PSA 2 (displayed in PSA's area) and a Tip Top Bread Honus Wagner (don't recall the grade). I focus on Clemente cards and it was great to see so many Clemente dealers with so many great cards. I picked up a 1965 Pirates Picture Pack Clemente, a '69 Greiner Tire set that I bought to flip, and what appears to be a 60s team issue that I've never seen before (scans below).

The "lowlight" of my day was wandering into the largest and most impressive collection of PSA-graded cards I've ever seen, including many HOFers that I need for my collection -- then looking up and seeing the dealer's name. The first card I priced was 3X what I was looking to pay image

I was able to pick up a reasonably priced T206 Polar Bear 3-Finger Brown (don't recall the dealer) -- I wasn't leaving without adding at least one card to my HOF collection (scan below).

I also took some pics that I'll add tomorrow.

Of course 4SC took everything early. It fits their business model perfectly. They send thousands of cards a month to PSA and flood the graded card markets with FAR more cards than the market will support for a given issue, quickly raising populations and drastically driving down prices for all other sellers who sell similar cards. Does 4SC really think there are enough buyers out there to purchase 50+ 1977 PSA 10 commons at one time? Of course not. But they don't give a sh*t about what the market will bear. Since they deal strictly in quantity, they couldn't care less if they are driving 77T PSA 10 prices down toward the 9.99 mark. They make $5-10 per card, and once in a while they get lucky and hit a 10 on a Fidrych or Yount and it makes all those $5-10 sales worthwhile.

They are bad for this industry.

Yet according to most members here at CU, 4SC is a valuable asset to the collecting community, and they will continue to buy from them.

I'm not a 4SC fanboy or anything, but they aren't printing the cards. If x amount of 1977 Topps exists, then that is what's out there regardless if it is graded or raw. So you are saying people should submit less cards to give a false impression the cards are scarer because it would mean lower POP's?
  • hammeredhammered Posts: 2,671 ✭✭✭
But even if you take all the raw 77T out there and assume that the same amount will eventually be graded in 4SC's absence (which is a big stretch), the difference is that they will likely be graded over the course of many years, and as new collectors come around over the next several years, new demand is created to absorb these new pop numbers gradually and prices don't decline dramatically like they are now in many cases. It's 4SC's obscene level of grading activity that floods the market with graded cards (far more than the demand requires), and pushes prices down.

Take those several dozen vending-type sets Burgundy was referring to. If 4SC wasn't making the rounds early, many of the sets would've gone to raw set collectors who would've kept them as-is, sure some would've been broken down for grading but I'm certain at a level far, far lower than 4SC has planned for them (no one but 4SC would be interested in subbing 6 copies of 1976T Bob Colluccio). I'm sure these sets will form the basis of their 5,000-card August submission, and I'm also certain that they will pay zero attention to the current market for any card they submit.
  • Why should they care? That like telling Walmard not to open this week cause mom and pops drug may have to close. Do you think they care? If I had the capital to start with teir model I would be right there with them. They have found a niche and are running with it when it plays out they will move to the next. Its all about $$$

No they aren't printing cards, they are just trimming them! The only way anything will change is if people stop supporting 4SC.

Edit to add: Highlight of my show has been meeting many board members, and putting faces with avatars. On the card front I am struggling to find cards I need for either my Clemente or Musial sets at even close proximity to VCP averages. I was able to pick up a very nice 66 Clemente from Paul Starks and a 63 Musial from Bruce Perry.

Here's the problem and this may ruffle a few feathers.........4 SC should not be given extreme deals on their subs. They are able to submit so many cards because they pay so little to submit.

I know it's a business for PSA; but when they give an extreme discount they encourage the market to be flooded with many cards that otherwise would not be there. If the average submitter pays $5 for bulk deals then the highest submitter should receive no better than $4 a card. This should never be a hobby of he who submits the most gets the cheapest prices and best grades there has to be some serious integrity behind this whole thing to keep it going or it will be seriously altered in the future and PSA knows this.

4SC drives the price down because they flood the market. That is bad for the "competition" that is looking to make money selling cards. For the people buying this is a good thing. To argue that it hurts the value of a persons collection is a misguided argument because the whole "value" thing is just a temporary situation. They may speed that process up but it would eventually happen on its own.

How much is a '89 Score baseball HOFer PSA 10 worth, and why?

If you are upset that 4SC is listing cards like that at $3, please answer my previous questions.

Lets get the focus of THIS thread back to the 2010 National. I'm interested to hear stories of all the cool stuff you've found. Surely there are still cards left that 4SC didn't buy before you got there. And, as a wise man once said, this thread is worthless without scans. Post pics!

come on guys! nothing on anything you bought, saw, or even a hint of what BBCE has? I am sorry that I had to miss this year....but somebody PLEASE weigh in!
  • I have no pics except for a few of us at Lee's place last night. Haven't had access to a computer for a few days.

Other than dropping a significant portion of my budget at BBCE's booth, I did manage to buy a few cards. Got a really sharp stack of 51 Bowmans that all looked to be in the PSA 7-8 range.

Most of my time has been spent getting autos and eating $9 hamburgers.

Still in Baltimore, will spend half a day at the show and then off to the airport to close out another National. Can't say I did very well in terms of finding cards I was looking for, but this was a GREAT National from the shear fact that I got to meet so many of the board members and we were able to spend some time at dinners, drinking, ripping, drinking, you get the picture. Will get pictures up later tonight or on Monday.
