1959 Topps blank back? Please help me ID these cards.

I just picked these up last night for a couple bucks a piece and I am trying to ID them. My original thought was a hand cut sheet that may have been back-doored but I am looking at the Fitzgerald and I don't know exactly where that "e" on the left side may have come from. I am currently trying to find a pic of an uncut 1959 topps sheet with him on it but no luck. Here is a link to the auction Link. The seller mentions 1959 Topps stick-ons?? I have never heard of them and would really like some opinions, or a pic of an uncut sheet with Fitz.
Thanks in advance,
Jason

Could be salesman samples that have been cut (they came in 3 card strips). Anthony (griffins) would know better.

Hopefully Don Johnson or Anthony will chime in.

I was always under the impression that salesman copies had some printing on the back.

    Good for you.
  • Is it the same stock as the regular '59s? Could they be cut from a '59 box?

That would be my guess too.

They are almost certainly from a sample strip...look at the left border of the Fitzgerald.

I noticed the "e" and I figure it came from something other an uncut sheet. I am 95% positive that salesman panels had lettering on the back. link

I emailed the seller and I probably should have mentioned that I purchased a forth card so 3 card salesman panel is most likely out.

Not necessarily because there were multiple 3 card samples produced featuring 3 different players on each.

That's true but I am still curious as to why they have blank backs and that "e"

  • Another '59 Salesman Strip

I was thinking it was a one sided sheet that was scrapped. The e. ? Possibly stamped sample and was used as a in house promo for a meeting?

Unsure but please follow up with any findings. Interesting.

Where there any Topps ads inserted in Sports Illustrated in 1959?

    After a quick google/ebay search; I don't think so.

I like the theory of the "sample" stamp it may be a possibility. It has to be from a salesman panel or something like it because that "e" is too close to the orange for it to be from another card.

This salesman sample has some wording so I am thinking that it may be from a one-sided panel with a caption. The only problem is that I haven't seen anything like that while I have been searching around.

Also, has anybody heard of these "stick-ons" that the seller mentions. I personally have not nor can I find any info on "stick-ons" anywhere.

I'll ask Mariner (Don Johnson) to mosey over here.

    Good for you.
  • Maybe the "e" came from "Not For Sale".

Same paper stock as other 59's? Maybe something like a Venezuelan promo.

The seller was not much help. I now have the cards in hand and they are definitely hand cut and the paper stock seems to be similar to regular issue cards so I am completely lost image
