BUT: He contributed mightily to the Yankees, and building what they have. If he was your owner, you loved him. If not, you hated him. And frankly, it wasn't his job to do anything for the overall good of the game. That's on the (spineless) commissioner and if the other 29 owners don't see it his way, that's their problem not his.
I didn't particularly like him. But I have a ton of respect for him.
2 little known facts about George: He originally wanted to buy the Indians, but did not/could not for some reason. Second, he was a huge Ohio State football fan. In fact, former Buckeyes Hopalong Cassady and Frank Howard still work for him. I LOVE him for that.

I am a diehard Red Sox fan, and never liked Steinbrenner for his business practices, but seriously, have some respect, people.
THIS is why a lot of good people have left these boards - people celebrating a man's death with "good riddance" comments.

Let’s put baseball a side, because he did a lot of good around the community he lived in. Those that live in the Tampa Bay area know he gave a lot of his money that took care of children. He built an entire pediatrics emergency wing at St Joes hospital in Tampa. Steinbrenner was a owner who didn't like to lose and would pay anything to win. My hats off to him. I wish the Pirates had that mentality.

To the bitter folks that HAVE to post and be disrespectful (rather than just keeping their mouth shut), congrats.
Love him or hate him, he turned over a 300 times profit on his 1973 purchase of the Yankees and built an entire empire out of a team that couldn't draw 15,000 a game when he bought them into a team that was drawing over 4 million before building a smaller ballpark. He built a model that many other owners are now finally starting to follow.
Steinbrenner was brash, loud and oft times obnoxious, but he was loyal to a fault and there's a line of people that owe their careers to the man. So, again, to those that want to bash him before he's even been buried, you've demonstrated your ignorance.

Congrats.. you have no class. I dislike the Yankees just as much as the anyone, but to those of you that are enjoying his departure shame on you. You probably hate him because of his tenure as owner of the New York Yankees. The way I look at it professional baseball is two things. 1st- It is a sport. 2nd- It is a business. Well, you can't deny that the man that the man was a winner and built winning teams. His championship rings speak for that. Secondly, you can look at his track record and tell that he was a shrewd businessman. I can see why you can be so crass. He was successful.
But more importantly the man served his country honorably and was more charitable than anyone on this board until his last day. A few years ago I visited some friends in the Tampa area. I dare you to find a school, hospital, clinic, or university in the vicinity that doesn't have something named after or donated by him. Last year I read a USA Today article detailing his dedication and monetary donations to the families of Police Officers and Firefighters in the region and greater NY. Just today I learned that he payed for the renovations (almost 10k worth) to the baseball stadium at my alma mater MTSU. Why? Because a friend of the family was on the coaching staff.
Feel free to say what ever you like about the man, but reserve those comments for the moment you have touched a fraction of the lives that he has.
I rooted against the Yankees yesterday and I will root against them tomorrow, but R.I.P. Boss.
