Back in the hobby

I've been reading a lot of the treads in here for the last several weeks and I thought it was time I come out of hiding and say hello. I've just recently gotten back into the hobby after 12 years away. About a month ago I decided to go through the bins of card I had in storage and well you can say I'm hooked again. I've been buyin cards/packs/boxes like crazy. I was just a kid when I started collecting in the 80s and 90s. It has been pretty interesting learning about the hobby today. The internet? Jersey cards? Autographed cards? Card grading? All new to me. It's been quite a treat to see all the resources there are on the internet for collecting. In the past, it was whatever my local card shop had and that's it. I just wanted to say I appreciate the answers I've gotten just by searching the forums here and I wanted to introduce myself. Seems like a good group of people on here.

    Hi Justin

    Welcome!

Just wondering what you plan to collect now?

I've been collecting actively since 1985 and more seriously since 1989 - 90 - and it's really changed over that time.

If you haven't given it much thought - I do have 3 suggestions:

    1. establish a FOCUS - so you don't run all over the place tryin to "corner the market" on everything.

    2. establish a BUDGET - and stay with it - it will keep down the night sweats and flashbacks...

    3. you can go BROKE saving money on ebay - if one is over budget - IMO - resist the urge to overspend and hold off - another will come along in due time.

Good luck and don't be a stranger.

Welcome to the boards. Thanks for posting. Great intro, so-so avatar. I bet you had a blast looking through your old stash. Brings back great memories.
Stone has excellent advice, and Im sure if you're been reading the forums that you already knew that. When I jumped back in, I made a mistake of buying too big of ticket items when I really wasn't educated enough to be at that level. Unless you collect some serious high end stuff, it's a great time to be a collectibles buyer. Nice to have you aboard!

Hahaha night sweats and flashbacks! hilarious. Yeah I did a little soul searching trying to think of the focus I wanted to have. I did a lot of reading and learned that baseball is where the money is or atleast the greatest popularity/history/market demand. However, I'm a novice baseball fan at best. I grew up collecting mostly hockey and football. I'm not as interested in hockey these days. So, football it is. It's my favorite sport. So, I've got a start to a decent Brett Favre player collection and in looking at some of the set registries I'm slowly starting to try collecting the all time great quarterbacks list. But yes it appears a budget would be a good idea.

    Thanks for the advice.

And to respond to the other guys.. my partner also thinks I'm crazy. I've been getting packages in the mail daily now and I've been getting comments like "is that the new necklace you bought me?"

    Thanks for the welcome!
