1933 Goudey Ruth 144 - Trying again - what do you think??

Thank you in advance for any insight you can provide. what do you think about this ruth, 33 Ruth

Almost looks too good to be true for a PSA 4, so want to get people's opinion before i bid (i.e reputable seller, possible fake / scam, condition for the grade, etc.).

Thanks again for any info you can provide...

It looks like a nice card from the front, but if I was gonna drop that kind of coin on a card, I would want to see a scan of the back also.
    Looking for Carl Willey items.
  • I would also ask for a scan of the back! It's a nice card tho! Don't know anything about the seller..
    who dey!

Almost have to think the card has a wrinkle somewhere. Card seems a little too nice for a '4'

The seller added a back scan to the listing. The card looks good to me. It was graded before the half-grades were instituted. If it were to be resubmitted, I'd wager a bet that it gets a half-point bump.

  • Looks like 23 bidders think it's a legit card. That's a nice looking 4 with great centering. Good luck

That's a great looking 4 and I agree it has a good chance at a bump.

BTW, how can you tell if the slab is pre .5 or post .5? I assume it's because the cert # begins w/ a 0. Do you know at approx which cert #'s the crossover begins?

The number grade is on separate line on newer grades

Looks good, has other similar grades and era cards in other auctions. Only thing that would worry me a little bit is that his account sat dormant on ebay since March '09. You might want to "ask the seller a question" and ask if he has another account. If so, is there some reason he has re-activated this account. Are there non-delivery complaints against another account? Or something that may worry you.

yup, that is Bernie C. He used to post a lot on this board about 6-7 years ago. Really good guy, and he most certainly knows his cards. If you have any questions send him a note, I"m sure he can allay any reservations you might have.
At one time he had a very very high grade '40 Playball set, and a nice T3 set.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Those two recommendations would be good enough for me!

He's been out of colecting for a few years, although I think he's still working on a '80 Topps graded set. I know he went back to school and it is a pretty intensive program, so I wouldn't read anything into a dormant account other than the fact that he actually has a life!

Nice to hear. I only brought it up as it may have been a hi-jacked account. Glad some of the good guys could vouch for the seller. Good luck with your bid. Go get your Babe.

Great seller, great card, and the only other info I can provide is that you just greatly increased the number of potential bidders for the card who wouldn't have otherwise seen this buying opportunity if you hadn't posted your question here.

    What is the question?

The R319 Ruth #144 looks like a PSA-4 to me.

And with that many bidders already on a vintage card (most use snipes), and "outing it" before it ended you will be paying PSA-4+ prices IMO.

I may throw a bid now, but I try to stay away from the #144 unless its a steal, it is 2X more common than any other card in the set (DPed).

Better to ask a question here and add potential bidders than get ripped off for 1000.00+

Because had he kept the auction to himself, won it, paid and received the card and then came here to ask if it

was legit, some of the very same folks that said he outed the auction would say that he should have come here first!

It's not like the card was listed in the screws and bolts section.

    Good for you.

Waw!! you guys are really amazing. thank you so much for all the great info. I agree with winpitcher (Steve) -- better off paying a little higher price and know i'm getting a ligit card, than save a few dollars and get ripped for the big $$.

By the way, I will be bidding often and aggressively, so all other should stay away!!! : ) there you go, that should help! haha...

Here are the total PSA pop #'s for the Ruth in the 33 Goudey set, btw:

    53: 589
    144: 831
    149: 635
    181: 732

So while the 144 is definitely the most common Ruth, it is not 2X the other ones.

I personally like the 53 or 181 Ruth's the best, and the Sport Kings Ruth even better. That one is probably my favorite.

Hello, I'm the seller of the card.

Thanks Anthony and Neil for the kind words. My E-bay activity did stall for awhile. Recently jumped back in with 33 Goudey and T9 Turkey Reds, and quickly realized one would have to go. Bought this card on E-Bay about a year ago from q-commerce. Never sent it in for review. Actually, I've never tried that service with any card. No creases or wrinkles.

Thanks everyone for the free publicity. Let me know if any of you have more questions.

    Bernie

P.S. I wondered why I had an inbox full of questions on this card.
