89 Upperdeck Mistake

Ok,
So I'm an idiot. I bought some packs of 89 Upper Deck hoping to crack a Griffey or 2. I didn't crack any. So this begs the question, are there any other cards in that set that are worth looking for? Or should I just throw the cards in the garbage?

I had the luck back then in 1989, on three separate occasions I bought a pack or two of Upper Deck and pulled a Griffey RC. I think that I sold one of them at the Tacony Palmyra flea market for $20, woohoo, big money!

I know the Griffey isn't worth much money. I could bought one instead of the 12 packs I got instead. I wanted to enjoy pulling one. I was 10 when the 89 set came out and I didn't have parents who cared to fund the hobby for me.

Nothing against AL, but can you imagine the firestorm that would have erupted had I said something similar? I mean
I would have had at least a thread devoted to me regarding me blowing someone. I would have had a poster transform
himself into a gangsta threatening me. At the least I would have been called a troll, and my post count would be thrown in my face at least 2 or 3 times.
The above would have happened even if I had simply agreed.
To the original poster no you are not an idiot. Did you buy the packs from an already opened box? If so that might be a reason
you got no one good and certainly no Griffs.

Do a message search , and type in 1989 Upper Deck , and I'm sure you will find alot of info for that set ! For all the newbee's out there , do a message search on what you are looking for , and then if nothing comes up or the answer you want is still escaping you , then post for some help !
As someone who already asked , ' Was the box sealed " ? Seems strange that you would not pull a Griffey out of a intire box ! Back in 1989 , when people were busting these packs open , there seemed to be a sequence in the box where the Griffey pack would be , ......... someting like the 4th pack down , top right corner of the box ! If that was the case , and people in the hobby knew about it , I would be very leery of buying a box that was not sealed ! True or not , just something to consider when purchasing unopened material !
And as someone mentioned , there are lots of variations in the 1989 Upper Deck Set to look for , which are harder to obtain then the Griffey !

Yes ! You are correct ! And if I remember right , even the Factory Sets had a flimsy seal the size of a quarter that you could just peel back without ripping the seal !

First sets released came with a small holographic sticker as a seal. Later releases were shrinkwrapped.
One can definitely do a search and find info but sometimes someone would just like the 'real-time' input from friends here about something they know very little about.
In recent months - many of the threads that have been created are 'rehash' topics - but 'new' to the poster - I believe one can either respond or just pass on the thread - I prefer that EVERYONE be welcome and have their thoughts accepted and respected.
And altho also a 'rehash' - some of the wisecracks here are old and tiresome, bordering on boorish.

If I remember correctly - it was said back when released, that the boxes were sequenced and some figured where the Griffs were - and just backfilled the boxes and sold them; I would definitely trust people like Steve Hart who takes the boxes out of a sealed case and shrinkwraps them.

oh, I don't think these packs were tampered with as I pulled a Biggio rookie!

My comment about doing a message search was just a suggestion for anyone new that did not know about the search feature on old threads ! And , as you pointed out , the wisecracks and boorish comments probably discourage alot of new and old people from ever posting ! That's why I use the search feature alot and rarely post messages ! As Card Hobbiest , we should all be promoting our passion of collecting and encouraging new people , not disparaging them ! We were all novices at one time ! I learned a couple of new things from this thread !!!!!!

This remark was not directed at you - as such - your comment has been mentioned many times in the past - and "can" have the potential of discouraging conversation.
As I said - sometimes people are looking for dialogue - heck - we can look stuff up on many historical webs that will be superior to what we discuss here - sometimes - people are just looking for interaction - and I would hate to see that vanish.
This site is going thru a 'stage' which I and other collectors don't find very encouraging - but I'm an optimist - as people bring up more hobby-related topics - things will heat up.
I remember back to 2004 when Heritage was hot as all get out and people were having a great time trading and discussing the set. That's the kind of stuff that makes this place great!
