Ryan Anderson was a pitching prospect for the Mariners back in the day. He hyped himself up a lot and wanted to be called "The Little Unit" because he thought of himself as the next Randy Johnson. That didn't last, and stupid people started calling him "The Space Needle". He crashed and burned. Not sure if he ever threw a pitch in the majors
  • From what I remember of the 2000 Ovation Ryan Anderson card, these were erroneously printed (can't remember why exactly), and had to be pulled from the line manually. So much like the 1989 FF Billy Ripken, they were marked or otherwise damaged for easier removal. A few still made it into packs, and the cards were a pretty hot item for for a while when he was a top prospect in terms of collectability.

The checklist is a very rare and difficult to find variation. Nobody cares about late 1980's issues, especially checklists. I searched all over the Pacific Northwest looking for one before the internet made things marginally easier. But still, who lists checklists individually for sale? Nobody. Nice find, all of them.

Can you fill me in on the checklist error? What am I missing?
  • The checklist has the positions listed. Most (actually, nearly all) do not. There's several errors and variations with all of the checklists in 1989 Fleer however. Its kind of a nightmare for those trying to put together a "master" set of 1989 Fleer, which aside from the Billy Ripken, one would think would be a relatively easy task. Its not.

    Ryan Anderson today...

The 2006 draft projections near the bottom are kinda funny...

"Tim Lincecum: The right-hander could make it to the major leagues quickly as a reliever."

I thought BGS was running a June special where any card regardless of condition got a 9.5.

I can see collecting error cards, but does grading them and getting back 7's and 8's really add value to them, or are you slabbing them to keep them well preserved? Serious question.
  • CollectorAtWorkCollectorAtWork Posts: 859 ✭✭✭
The grade doesn't add much value, but slabbing does authenticate the card, which I think is the most important factor. The protection factor is important too. For me, whenever I have high value raw cards, I'm always worried, I'm going to accidentally drop the card and dent a corner. Even if the card is in a top loader, it might fall out, etc. I know, chances are minimal, but they'd basically be zero when they're slabbed.

If you want a card protected, you can't go wrong with a Beckett holder.
