Can anyone help mewith my 1951 Bowman Willie Mays RC search? FAKES?

I have been looking for one of these in PSA 6 or 6.5 condition but am weary to buy one because of the amount of fakes out there. I have heard horror stories about people spending thousands on big time vintage cards and them turning out to be fake. Can anyone help me and tell me how I should go about buying one and what I should look for? Thanks !

a card like that wouldn't be on craigslist if it was real

  • for the most part craigslist is good for 2 things, scams and hookers
  • I would just wait for one of the major auction houses to have one and go for it, thats the safest way. REA, Goodwin, Mile High, Legendary and Memory Lane would be top places to be checking.

If I saw one on ebay I would have to be comfortable with the seller (like davidsvintage, JustCollect, 4sc, etc) otherwise I would pass.

A 6 or 6.5 is far more likely to be found on eBay than in a major auction house. The auction houses are mostly 7's - 9's. If you see one you like on eBay, just ask around here about the seller. We should be able to steer you in the right direction.

The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • Okay guys thanks! Are there alot of fakes of cards like these or is it just being cautious? Because I'm going to Baltimore for the national also and may buy one there...
  • Every Mays card is a fake. Willie Mays never actually existed.

Willie Mays was actually a warlock, and a friend of Samantha Stevens.

    Just a suggestion . . .

It sounds like you've got money to spend, but either limited knowledge of graded cards or a severe case of paranoia. I would suggest that you educate yourself BEFORE buying and then asking questions. Based on what you've posted so far, you're just asking for trouble...

I hope you have a great time at the National. You'll easily find what you're looking for there. It's suicide for any dealer to sell a fake PSA card there. Good luck!
