Vent/Rant about Ebay Auctions (or lack thereof)

I am SOOOOOOO tired of people complaining about lack of auctions, saying that Ebay has turned into a ground of overpriced BIN's. Well, I run a few 99 cent, no reserve auctions. 90% of the cards that I took that approach with set record lows (nowhere close to VCP average). Everyone wants auctions, yet noone wants to support them. Well, I am SICK & TIRED of giving my cards away! Count me among those "overpriced" BIN's from now on! Thanks for letting me vent....carry on....

try using BIN's with prices just over VCP and then accept best offers.

I agree everyone wants auctions but I think ebay has lost a lot of bidders, so auctions no longer get the hits and views they got a few years/months back.

  • I spend a MUCH higher percentage of my income than I should on cards, and about 3/4 of the cards I buy are sold via EBay auction format. I'm doing my part!!!

I agree. People love to complain about ebay but yet they still go on there to buy cards. If you hate it so much you just need to find a different avenue to get your cards. There are still alot of other places to go...card shows, ads in the magazines, other online places...

Yeah, and if you do not like any policy from the water or the electric company....just shut them off. That will teach them.

Didn't you say this last month too?

Start your auctions at the least amount you are willing to take for an item.

Cards generally slow down this time of year too.

I never complained about that....I hardly ever buy cards off of Ebay. I guess that is the problem. The observation was about how everyone wants auctions, yet when the auctions hardly sell for anything, then the sellers are hesitant to run auctions. That equates to the scale tipping heavily in favor of the BIN format instead of the auctions. Then the buyers are like "What happened to all the auctions??".......duh...........it is an unfortunate Catch-22 cycle.........
  • Yes, Ebay doesn't have many auctions any more. It's a shame. That's the only way I've ever sold any thing on Ebay.

I just wish people would put a reasonable BIN on things. Seller list a star player in a common grade (1961 T #405 Gehrig PSA7) for what an PSA 8 - PSA 8.5 is worth.

    That's my 2 cents.

I'm in the same boat as Bobby... I list my auctions at $0.99 (plus BIN) expecting some bidding war, but more times than not it seems like only one person bids on it! At the same time I see the same card sell for $10 BIN! Either people are stupid, or they like instant gratification. I'm still sticking with the $0.99 auctions though... I'm a glutton for punishment.

I think that water and electricity are a necessity, baseball cards are not. It is very hard to survive without water and electricity (not saying it can'r be done...just difficult) millions of people live without baseball cards.

You are looking at it like a collector....many of us, make over living from the internet. I can run a generator and have water hauled in for less then what I can make on eBay. It is what it is....but I don't have to be happy about it.

    Couple other comments....

I typically find complaint threads annoying. We should possibly rename the US the United Complainers or something like that. eBay however I think should annoy us all...and I placed my eBay complaints...in threads that by title, are obvious eBay complaint threads.

Also, I am not just talking. As I noted, I closed about 1500 ebay listings this last week. I am moving most over to ecrater, which is fine for the moment.

So eBay really annoys me right now...but I am doing something about it, other then typing in a forum. One has to wonder though, what future is ebay with the loss of people like me with mostly unique items, who also spend most of their ebay sales, back on ebay.

I imagine I will always nickel and dime autions I want. There are always deals to be had, but it much easier to justify bidding when spending money from eBay. It's more like trading cards. So many of us never actually see the money we make in hand. We are or were the backbone of what was eBay. There will a domino effect from the continual loss of people like me.

I am a buyer only and only auctions. I buy 50's and 60's cards.

    Why don't I use BINs?

Most BINs are pretty overpriced, and do not factor in centering. It's like sellers just look at the grade, slap a price that is typically 20-30% higher than the card will sell at auction, and let it sit there. I honestly don't think most BIN sellers care if they ever sell the card. Of course I don't have to buy it if I don't want it, but I actually get tired of looking at dozens of overpriced, off center BINs. So. I stick to auctions.

Maybe it's a different story for newer cards.

A major reason why there are so many PSA cards at BIN's is because they take forever to sell. Or dont sell at all.

Maybe the reason is because the majority of the auction sellers, are tired of selling their items for pennies on the dollar. I can hold out for REA's once a year auctions and get more than I get on Ebay - and that is after REA takes their cut!
  • It seems when you start an auction too low, you get very few bids, but if you start it higher you get more. People don't like to see collectibles going down in price, so starting an auction at .99 may not be a good idea. Sometimes you just have think of listing as though you are bidding on that item. If you list an item at .99 would you bid on it yourself, or are you more likely to bid at say $5? There is definately a pschology to it. Just my theories, curious what others think?

i think a lot of buyers, like myself, are being much more selective about what they bid on, due to the fact there is a multitude of ugly stuff being sold through BIN and at auction, so the domino effect has far fewer people just gobbling stuff up like the old days, because they don't want to own it, just touch it ever so briefly on the way to the bank.

we've been spoiled and soiled by eBay, the concept has really never changed, it was always a haven for bargain hunters, and now that there are so many more bargain hunters and almost no bargains, well......
