What's your favorite baseball card set of all-time?
I thought this would be a cool discussion to start.
I would love to hear what your favorite set(s) of all time is/are and what your plans are with that set or what you have accomplished with that set, scans you would like to share, and any other details you want to share.
My favorite modern set of all-time is '09 Topps Allen and Ginter. When the Allen & Ginter set first came out I liked the whole feel of the set, the card stock, the mini's, the framed jerseys and autographs, the quirky inserts, and all of the other aspects that makes this a favorite year after year. I think what really did it for me in '09 was the colorful oil pastel backrounds used in the set. My plans for this set are to eventually, hopefully, complete a master set. That will obviously take a long time to finish, but it will definitely be fun to put together.
The best pull I have from this set is a Brock Yates auto, at first this does not seem to be all that spectacular...but it is not the card itself that makes this a good pull. I pulled this out of retail and it is a group A autograph which has odds of somewhere between 1 in 800-1,200 packs. I cannot remember what the exact numbers are, but it is somewhere in that ballpark. I have also pulled a Rickie Weeks rip card out of hobby which is a case hit.
I have opened 5 hobby boxes, 3 blaster boxes, and an array of retail packs along with the occasional ebay purchase.
...I'll get to my favorite vintage set at another time.
In the meantine I can't wait to read about everyone else's favorites.
-Cheers!

<< <i>I think the '56 is a beautiful set and if I ever had the money for it, I would love to start it. I also like the '65, but that set is huge, so neither of these sets are going to get started any time soon. >>
When I saw the title of this thread the '56 set was the one that jumped into my mind as well. I like everything about the set; its vibrant colors, the horizontal format, the great action shots with the portrait shot, the autograph. Pretty much all the start players of the day (except Musial), NY Giant & Brooklyn Dodgers uniforms, the first team cards, Mantle is back, last set of the larger size cards, man I could go on & on....
Modern, I always loved the '87 Fleer set.
On a more serious note, my favorite set of the 80's is the 84 Donruss
70's would be the 71 Topps
60's I would go with 63 Topps
50's would be the 56 Topps
I love the 35 Goudey 4 in 1's
But the All-Time coolest has to be the 1915 Cracker Jacks

Favorite modern baseball set...
I will go in the direction of what I like best now (as an adult) and that (might) be 1984 Topps. It has a couple cool RCs (Strawberry & Mattingly) and I really like cards like subsets cards with HOF'er, and in '84 it has the All-Stars, the League Leagues, the Highlight cards and unforgetably, the All-Time (current) AL & NL leader cards.
Clear Skies,
Mark
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
I've done both.

90's - 90 Leaf
80's - 84 Fleer
70's - 71 or 72 Topps - First cards I ever bought
at the convenience store were 71 Topps,
72's you got to love the In Action cards
60's - 63 Fleer - Small enough to collect, enough
star power to make it interesting
I don't collect any sets prior to that.
1951 Bowman

Agree with both of these!!
czar's favorite set is '66 Topps, who woulda thunk it?
'69 Topps for me.
I like the 1960 set because of its fun, colorful look. It is what I think I vintage set should look like.
The black borders of the 1971 topps set really make those cards pop, the colors and font used for the team name, player name and position meshes really well with the black of the border. The action shots are top of the line and the set has plenty of Hall of Famers to keep things interesting. The black borders can also be a down-side because of how condition sensitive they are, but nothing is more satisfying than a 1971 topps card in great condition.
I also like the aesthetically pleasing 1952 Bowman set, the colors in the high grade cards are so vibrant and sharp looking.
I haven't really ventured into anything pre-war yet, but there are plenty of good ones from that era, too. 1888 Goodwin Champions, 1909-1911 T206's, 1933 Goudey, 1941 Play Ball, 1941 Cracker Jacks, etc.
I like so many of these different vintage sets, but that is a thing I love about this hobby of ours, there is so much to choose from and so much to collect that it just never gets old.
