What do you think the toughest subset/insert card to pull was in the 90's???

What card was(and maybe still is) impossible to find from this time period??

    I guess any of the later 90s 1/1's. Like 1998 and 1999 Upper Gold's.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

    1990's INSERT THREAD AWESOME!!!!!!!

The autos from Score were very tough (Mantle, Dimaggio, Yaz, Musial)

The 1994 UD Mantle and Griffey's were tough as well.

For the sets I collected some that are tough or non existent

    1997 Donruss Preferred Precious Metals
1998 Bowman Chrome Golden Anniversy Refractors
1996 Ultra Hitting Machines Gold Medallions
    1996 Ultra Thunderclap Gold Medallions

These cards are out there but hard to find. I don't count 1-1 cards as being tough as they are lottery ticket type of cards. These are cards just about impossible to pull out of packes

Two cards come to mind... the 1992 Donruss Elite Ripken AUTO, although it's numbered to 5000. You have to open up a TON of product just to land any Elite, and to land the Ripken would be a warehouse full.

Another is the 1998 Donruss Crusade Red (#/25).

    I'm sure there's more.

#/5= impossible. In fact, I busted a bunch of boxes and never even pulled a non-refractor gold #/50.

I've been tossing around the idea of starting the non-refractor Gold set but commons sell for $5 and I'm really not keen on dropping $2500 on the set over the next 10 years. Then again, I probably will because I'm dumb like that.

The 1997 Baseball Finest Gold Embossed Refractors only come around once in a while (as far as non-serial numbered cards go).

Lee just thank God 1998 sucked for RC's or you might be paying that for one player.

I haven't seen many of the 1999 Topps MVP parallel sets. They are "numbered" out of 150 but came as part of a redemption. I am unsure how many actually were ever redeemed.

The Gold Embossed Refractors were awesome. In fact I would love to see if anyone ever did a full embossed refractor set.

I am still working on my 1996 Topps Finest set. The damn player collectors love the gold and gold refractors.

I am almost done with my 1997 Donruss Preferred set. I need about 20 silvers and 1 gold.

Anyone ever work on the 1997 Fleer Showcase Legacy set, numbered out of 100?

I saw one 1994 Finest Refractor set sell and it sold fairly well. I think there are alot of people who would want some of these harder to get insert sets now. I see alot more interest at card shows in them.

1997 Pinnacle Inside Diamond Edition Brett Butler. image

first off, the idea of breaking open a can with cards inside is ridiculous. Because of that, my opinion/belief is that not much of that crap was sold/opened. I've never even seen a hint of that card.

edited to add the opinion/belief clarification.

The '97 Legacys are fantistic-looking cards - one of my favorite all-time sets. Although I don't track all the cards, Butlers have come up often enough for me to believe that most other players are readily available. Obviously the superstars of the set would be an entirely different story.

Funny you should ask- I actually started a 96-97 Flair Legacy basketball set and decided not to pursue it since each Kobe was going to be $1200+ and I wanted to do all three rows. Then there were the Jordan's which would've been like $750 ea. I got about 50 cards into it and decided to just sell them before I got in too deep.

I am however building the following sets (if anybody has singles to sell/trade let me know):

    BB
    93, 94, 95 Finest refractors
    94, 95 Bowman's Best refractors
    93 TSC 1st Day Production
94, 95 Pinnacle Museum and Artist Proofs

    FB
    93 TSC 1st Day
    94 Finest refractors
    94 Pinnacle Trophy

    BK
    93-94 Finest refractors
    93-94 TSC 1st Day
I'll also start a 96-97 Chrome refractors one day

I have the following sets complete:
    95 Select Artist's Proofs
    95 Score Platinum

So basically I have my hands full, but I'll get these guys done at some point and move on to other ridiculously stupid sets that only 8 people on earth would want to have in their collection.

On the 1997 Gold Embossed Refractors there are fifty total. I have 6 of 50. Someone out there is very interested in these things. Todd Hundley went for $100+ last week.

I've got the 1993, 1994 and 95% of the 1995 refractor sets. Working on 1999 Finest Gold #/100.

A couple months back, there was a Golden Anniversary Griffey refractor on the bay for a $200 BIN. Not sure how I missed it
  • MorgothMorgoth Posts: 3,950 ✭✭✭
Yikes!!!!!!!! Get that griffey graded a 10 and you had a gold mine, pun intended.

I wouldn't say worthless Lee. I am becoming surprised how popular these sets are becoming. People in their early 30s and latter grew up basically collecting these sets, got PO'd when they realized they were crap due to the popularity of game used and autos in the 00's and sold them for nothing or left them to rot in boxes and sheets.

Now I think people A. Want to relive their sets they collected as a kid and B. You can actually find these cards now.

You don't know how much fun it was just finding one 1997 Donruss Preferred Platinum card let alone one you needed back in 1997. Now you can go on ebay and find a the whole set almost any day of the week.

    Lee,

I have about 3/4 of a BB 95 Bowman's Best Refractor set. Very few stars. I busted about 8 boxes of wax and put in sleeves so each of these is mint or better. I sold this lot for $200 about two years ago but the deal fell through at the last minute as the guy lived in Canada and didn't want to pay actual shipping costs.

I have BB 93 Stadium 1st Day Puckett 597. 94 and 95 Pinnacle Museum Puckett and a handfull of commons in the other Baseball issues you listed.

I have a handfull of BK 96-97 Chrome ref singles, minor stars and common rookies, maybe 4 or 5.

Very few football 1st days but I know I have a couple somewhere.

I think the biggest challenge will be finding all of the non-puckett stuff.....

    Morgoth,

I have some 96 Finest Gold and Gold Refractors of Puckett. I'll have to see if I have more than a couple raw. I'm sure I have a couple, at least.

The bronze cards are the vast majority of the set and they only come as base bronze cards and regular refractors.

The silver cards (100 total) came as base silver, regular silver refractors, base embossed and embossed refractors.

The gold cards (50 total) came as base gold, regular gold refractors, base die cut embossed, and refractor die cut embossed.

  • the toughest card I had finding in hockey was the 94/95 Be a Player autograph # 119 Jiri Selgr. Impossible to find in packs because Upper deck never put them in packs, it then became a mail in lottery and if you where lucky enough for them to pull your postcard you got the card. Another tough card from the set was a full signature Victor Kozlov, he got tried of signing his name and just initialed the rest with V.K. just fyi
