Got a Second Chance Offer...Would You Pull the Trigger?

Got a Second Chance Offer on this item for a price of $405 after being the second highest bidder last night. Seller says that the high bidder deactivated his eBay account shortly after winning the item.

Obviously I was willing to pay $405 last night, but when I lost the card I went ahead and spent about $200 on some other stuff. Normally I wouldn't spend $600 on cards (unless a single card that just cost that much) in such a short span, so I'm having second thoughts. Also wondering if the whole arrangement seems a little strange; it was an awfully short amount of time between the auction ending and receiving the second chance offer. Seller does have excellent seller feedback over the last couple months as it looks like he's breaking up a vintage collection.

Having trouble pulling the trigger, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to kick myself if I don't. Seems like a good price for a well-centered 6.5. Thoughts?

I'm not entirely sure how VCP works, but wouldn't all the information you need be included in the link in the original post?

Great feedback or not---there is a sh*tload of shilling going on. I'm seeing tons of the same cards for sale from the same sellers like 1 month later than the first sale. I'm talking many "big" dealers. It sounds like you have basically spent your money elsewhere. I would decline unless you were the underbidder on an already great deal which I suspect this is not a great deal.

If you were willing to pay it yesterday, why not today. If you won the bid yesterday, would you be happy?
  • Possible shill bidding account.

From one of his past auctions:

    Total bids: 150
    Items bid on: 78

Your bid would have been $391 without the bogus bid.

The amount between $391.66 and $405 isn't very much. The bidder who entered $386.66 seems legit.

If I was after that card I'd still buy it regardless of the possible shill. It's one of the greatest action shots ever.

I'd still feel annoyed with the seller, but I don't think it would stop me.

On 2nd chance offers, the high guy's bid, regardless if we think it's a shill account or not, DOES affect the price.

Not saying it's right or wrong, just how eBay's system works.

BRDSR - If you want that card, go ahead and accept it; $5 shouldn't make or break this deal.

Or if you want to continue this transaction via eBay, ask the Seller to relist at whatever $ y'all agree to and then buy.

Or if you really want to a chance, do the transaction outside of eBay where the seller can pass the saving of fees to you. However, you'll lose eBay's buyer protection.

  • I went ahead and purchased the card for $405. I didn't know the VCP, but bobby says one sold awhile ago for $490. My own data suggests that you'll rarely pick up a PSA 6 for less than $350 or a PSA 7 for less than $600 (and both can go for up to $100 more than those totals), so picking up a 6.5 for $405 seemed like a pretty good grab. I also personally like cards that are slightly off-center t/b (with respect to the card, not the holder), and so this seemed like a perfect card for me. If I were the seller I might be a little upset to let it go for $405, so I didn't want to start quibbling over $15.

For the seller's part, he confirmed that he would ship with insurance and delivery confirmation, and after I made the purchase he said he would also ship priority instead of first-class. Already received PayPal's "Your package is on its way" e-mail, as well as a shipping insurance confirmation e-mail. So far it's going off without a hitch, and I'll be thrilled to make this my first key card in the 1953 Bowman Color set.

Congrats!!! It's a good card at a good price. It seems like the economy has alot of sellers dumping if they can't afford to hold onto things.....

Garabaldi I had the same thing happen to me. I spent my money on another card. Didn't respond to the second chance offer. I was harrassed by another 3 emails asking why I even bid if I wasn't willing to buy it now at a reduced price, on and on.

In my experience 2nd chance offers are best left ignored unless I know the dealer really well.

  • Appreciate all the input. Received the card today and am very happy with the purchase. Card definitely looks good for a 6.5, and I will probably consider resubbing at some point in the future for a shot at 7. Would certainly vouch for the seller.

There may be some shilling going on, but there is also a huge increase in buyers bidding and not paying. I have talked to three or four other high end dealers who have said the same thing is happening to them. But Ebay has it right on the money with their "nothing but a positive" feedback policy for buyers, even dead beats.
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo.

High end and even low end sellers are experiencing more non paying bidders, I have had 5 in the last 6 weeks,
One buyer (afrosamuraijp) was nice enough to email 24 hrs after the auction and say sorry but I will not be able to afford this, then proceed to go on a buying spree spending 3 times as much money as my (100.00 auction) of course I offered the 2nd chance offer to be ignored, then relisted the item and it brought 120.00 go figure.

Sometimes the seller has more than one of the item they are selling, especially if there are selling unopened boxes of cards. I auctioned off a box of cards that I had 4 boxes of, it went so high I offered 2nd chance offers to the 2nd and 3rd highest bidders , but of course none of them accepted it. I guess fearing scam or shill bidding stops a lot of buyers from taking the 2nd chance offer, which then in turn stops a lot of sellers from even offering 2nd chance offers as they feel it is a waste of time.
