Here's one for you world guys!! I need some help here!!

I'm getting very close to finishing my set of Kings of France series of medals by Armand Auguste Caqué. Problem is I can't find a complete list of the series, I really can't find any info at all!! I'm sure over in France there has to be some docs, if anyone could come up with a complete list I would really appreciate it! What I really need are the un-numbered ones above #60.

Thanks!!

  • I looked this up in Mitcher's book, and it has a listing for Numismatic Gallery of the Kings of France. Is this what your looking for? It describes three different sets that were produced, the first by engraver Thomas Bernard (a 72 piece set) a second by Armand Auguste Caque (commissioned in 1829), and a third set (72 piece) commissioned by Louis Philippe in 1830.

As for the Caque series, it doesn't list how many there were, but it references Forrer (BDM.I,1904,342) as having noted them, if that helps. There are pictures and descriptions in Mitchiner's book if we can find the right ones.

I can send you some details if these are what you are looking for.

Added--- As I read some more, Mitchiner only lists pictures of the third set, Louis Philippe's issues. But it does say that Forrer (the Catalogue de poincons, coins et medailles du Musee Monetaire 1830) lists Henry IV to Charles X as numbers 62-69 for Caque's set (pages 453-455).

I think the numbered ones stop at 62, so a list of the un-numbered ones would be appreciated!!!

  • It looks like you'll need to find info on Forrer's book - the Catalogue de poincons, coins et medailles du Musee Monetaire (1830). Mitchiner's has a complete listing of only the third set, issued by Louis Philippe.

The third issue set includes - (from)#62 Henry III, #63- Henry IV, 64- Louis XIII, 65- Louis XIIII, 66- Louis XV, 67- Louis XVI, 68- Louis XVII, 69- Napoleon, 70- Louis le Desire Roi, 71- Charles X, and 72- Louis Philippe I. These are all listed and described in Mitchiner's book, with scanned pictures. If they are the same set, I'll be glad to send you detailed info on each issue. I don't know anything about them beyond what I'm looking at here, and this book could certainly have a better layout.

If you're willing to slog through a French-language website, Marty, I think you might find what you need at <www.fapage.com/medailles_des_rois_de_france.htm> The links in red at the bottom go to the different houses/lines of the French monarchy and have pictures of each....
