Filthy and Nasty come to mind. Wow!
The best pitch to start a hitter off with is always strike one.
  • Unreal. The movement on his pitches is sickening.

related story- I saw the Red 1/1 within minutes of it's 1st listing. $1,025 BIN. Thought about it and was too scared if I couldn't flip it. Then hit the BIN but didn't complete the process. It was quickly bought and relisted. Ended on auction for$4,800...image

Just be careful..... I wouldn't run out and get his rookies just yet..... chaz

Pitcher Brien Taylor was selected by the New York Yankees with the first overall pick in the 1991 amateur draft. He signed with the Yankees for an unprecedented $1.55 million. He is one of two top picks to never reach the major leagues (Steve Chilcott is the other). In high school he had fanned 476 batters in 239 innings, going 29-6 with a 1.25 ERA.

In 1999, the Yankees released Taylor. He signed with the Seattle Mariners but was released after spring training. He wound up with the Cleveland Indians but surrendered 8 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings, worse than even his two prior South Atlantic League stints. He would not pitch professionally again.

WATCH OUT !!!! NOt saying strasburg is going to end like this........ but...............................

just think - if he keeps it up for a couple of years, wins a cy young, and has one of the best seasons in MLB history, it could be worth this much:

NEVER BUY CARDS OF YOUNG PITCHERS

I think some guys are missing the point here....buying Strasburg cards vs appreciating Strasburg talent is two seperate things.

Forget the 'investment' part of it and enjoy watching this talent grow.
Could be the next great pitcher.

Being in the Pacific Northwest and following the Mariners lately I can't help but be very fond of the situation the Washington Nationals are in...with Bryce Harper added into their system it's going to be a treat to watch these prospects bloom.

Brien Taylor never pitched above AA ball...comparing what he did in high school to what Strasburg is doing right now is an insult to Strasburg...

well, i'm hoping they don't hold SS's next start over a day, because that will put him against my K-heavy Tigers.... Also, it looks like rain in CLE on his next scheduled start...... looking bleak in the D!!! either way, i WILL see this kid's next start, because CLE is only 3hrs away and i don't see them selling out any time soon...... Saw the first 2 innings.... this guy's stuff is electric!!! looks like he's throwing a whiffle ball!!

Color me impressed. After all the hype I was prepared for a totally anti-climatic average outing with a no decision.

Yes, there's no point in comparing Brien Taylor to Strasburg-- unless Strasburg also gets in a bar fight and ****s up his arm.

Simply nasty stuff - it was the Pirates, but still. THat one uncle charlie that had the LH batter flinching and went right down the heart of the plate? Unfair. Health is the only thing that will keep this guy from being a perennial CY contender...here's hoping Dusty Baker is never his coach.

Trust me....this kid will get rocked... it is a matter of time before the hitters get to him...... chaz
  • + 1

I was blown away just like the batters that faced him.....I am buying into the hype for now but I know one injury and his career could be very short. Hopefully that does not happen...I am rooting for the guy even though I don't care a thing about the ball club he plays for...
  • gemintgemint Posts: 6,178 ✭✭✭✭✭
It will be interesting to see how he does against a major league offense. Incidentally, the Bucs' AA team in Altoona was the first to beat him earlier this year. Maybe they should swap the major league roster with their AA team. I say this as a Pirates' fan.

I can't wait to see this kid pitch. Is his breaking ball as good as Blyleven's was? To this day, Bert's curveball is the best one I've ever seen.

Every pitcher does on occasion. I don't anticipate it will be a regular (or common?) occurrence in the long run however. With the huge caveat of health withstanding, of course.

This might be the most obvious statement ever posted on this site. EVERY pitcher gets rocked at some point. Except maybe Bob Gibson in 1968, who went the entire season without being knocked out of a game, that is.

    What is "knocked out?"

I'd say he got "knocked out" of this game. He allowed 14 baserunners in 8 innings.

Koufax sucked his first 4-5 years. Just throwing that out there.
After watching the highlights, I don't see why you can't be excitedly anticipating what this kid can do. Save the hr, he embarassed the Bucs. He could flame out, but he could also keep it up or, perish the thought, get better with experience.

    Karl Spooner......1955 Topps

Struck out 14 or 15 batters in his debut ( a shutout)

Followed that up with another 13 or 14 k game and another shutout

Came back the next year and was done.

Taylor was in the minors a couple years, pitched pretty well. Then he got into a fight( defending his brother), and was injured. Kind of a freak thing. Strasburg already has a game under his belt. Time will tell if he can keep it up.

He did pitch well - albeit with terrible control (102 walks in 150 IP in his second year of pro ball) - in the minors but it's not true to say he was defending his brother in that fistfight. His brother was in a fight earlier and Brien Taylor & a friend went and confronted the guy his brother had fought at that guy's home. Taylor went looking for a fight, he didn't just jump in and defend his brother. He apparently missed a haymaker, fell on his shoulder and that was that. 8 MPH off the fastball and all remnants of control were lost and he was finished as a prospect.
