'52 Topps Freebies Grades In.....Thoughts

Got results from my 15 Collectors Club subs today. Not sure what to think. The Stewart and Surkont 5's are a little shocking (no creases). The Seminick for a horizontal thought at least a 7 and the Gordon, Masi, and Dorish might be better than a 6. I replaced the Wynn and Baker with the Mays and Wyrostek which got the grades I was expecting. Feel free to let me know if I'm whinning here and got what I should have, but would like thoughts either way. Thanks Doug

I want to know where you guys find such clean raw cards this day in age?

I havent found a psa 7 worthy 50's card in anyones bin or case in 3 years of searching, card shops, card shows, nowhere period....Pacific Northwest is apparently lacking in vintage.

    Doug,

It's simply too difficult to give a truly accurate assessment soley based on scans. However, my overall impression of the group is Ex-mt, which is pretty much how the grades averaged out. Individually, it's hard to tell. For example, Stewart looks like it may have suffucient wear to merit a 5, while Surkont looks worthy of a 7. I'm surprised by the 8 OC for Lemon. Based on the scan, it looks to me like a straight 6. Seminick certainly looks worthy of a 7.

A card grades lower than expected usually because we miss something. Sometimes, however, it's just subjectivity in action. Look 'em over carefully when you get 'em back. I'll bet you find that most are graded accurately. You can always resub those with which you disagree.

I used to have disdain for the crack-and-resub process. Then I discovered that I do the same thing with my own raw cards. That is, I may grade a card "X" on one day, then "Y" on another. There are just so many variables involved.

In the final analysis, you have many great-looking cards there, regardless of the grade.

  • Thanks Brett I appreciate your thoughts. It looks as if they didn't like the discoloration on the borders of the Stewart and Surkont. I've never cracked and re-subbed a card before but I'm thinking I may do that with a few here in the future.

....and frankly I think the Sam Dente card is overgraded....

The 15 pictured cards don't match up with the 15 cards in the submission.

Line 4 of the submission lists Willie Mays, but there's no Mays card pictured. Further, an Early Wynn card is pictured, but is not listed in the submission.

I certainly agree that the Dente doesn't look like an 8, with both bottom corners showing wear.

Are the cards pictured, really the ones that were submitted?

    Steve,
I'm sure those pictured are the ones that Doug submitted. He explained in the original post that he replaced Wynn and Baker with Mays and Wyrostek.

Ah, thanks Brett....I missed that image

  • I also agree the Dente graded higher than it should have. After a few days of thinking about it I believe Brett is right, it's subjectivity in action and all the grades even out. I'm just happy to have them in my set. Thanks again for all the opinions. Doug
