another question for ebay afficionados

Well I caved and am letting the buyer extort money from me to keep my perfect rating. I'm giving the d-bag 1/2 of the purchase price and letting him keep the items. My question is what is the proper way to do the refund to him and possibly get some of my fees back from ebay/paypal? Help on this one would also be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Josh

You cannot get any EBAY fees back on a partial refund.

If you ask the "buyer" real nice, maybe he will leave
you good feedback or, at least, not NEG you.

edit for clarity: VERY tiny pennies are refunded from your PP fee.

  • thanks storm, do i just do a paypal back to the buyer without running it through eBay?

That's the absolute worse thing you could have done....

Just send him a refund via PP.

Use the sale invoice as your refund platform.

  • By going through paypal to do the refund you do get a small (miniscule) amount of your paypal fees back but not your ebay fees.
  • thanks again storm.

bobbyw8469: I did all of the corespondence through eBay to reach this final agreement. He basically said that even if he returned the item he would neg me- he won 3 items and would leave a neg on the others that he didn't return. Basically this is the only way I can see to limit my loss and keep my rating. This is the first time in the 15 years that I have been selling cards that I have had an issue- especially one where the buyer basically is extorting money from me. There is nothing wrong with the items, its just a way for him to get some money back. I'm a small seller, I check every item I sell before shipping so I am almost 100% confident that there was nothing wrong with the items- especially what he is claiming but I really have no recourse and I don't really want to loose my good rating over $8. Its sad that some people are like this but so it goes. You take your lumps and move on.

Thank you again to all that responded to both this thread and the other one.

    Thank you,
    Josh

"...You take your lumps and move on...."

    ////////////////////

    I don't disagree.

It is too late to repair the system now.

When the "partial refund SCAM" first started - if ALL sellers
had simply said "NO" - we would not be in the mess we are
in now. Now, the SCAM is so prevalent that standing up to
    the EXTORTIONISTS is generally self-destructive.

I fully understand not wanting to have your FB-dinged. And,
while I seldom issue partial refunds, I realize that some folks
think they have to do so.

    ...............

My criteria for a partial refund is:

    1. I decide the buyer is likely acting in good faith, even if I think
    he/she is mistaken.

    2. I decide that fighting/thinking about the matter is not in my
    interest.

    3. I negotiate the FB issue to finality, before the refund is issued.

If those three points are met, I will do a partial refund.

Otherwise, all items must be returned - at the "buyer's" expense -
and I will refund the full amount.

    ....................

It is important to note that starting in October, the "partial-refund
SCAM" will likely expand to become the "full-refund SCAM."

The mere filing of an INR/SNAD claim by an EXTORTIONIST will ruin
many small sellers. They may well decide that giving stuff away for
free to CRIMINALS is preferable to being NARUd. (I won't decide that,
but lots of folks likely will.)

    I agree with Bobby.

    No partials, full refunds only.

Buyer sends the item back, he gets the refund.

Or, in this case since he basically extorted you I'd have waited the longest amount of time possible to issue

the refund had he negged me the 3 times. 45 days from the date received would be my price for the negs.

And I'd not reply to his constant emails looking for his refund had he not left feedback yet.

I'd prolly reply to the first one saying something like "leave feedback and I'll issue the refund.

Somehow I would NOT let this guy run my business.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • No way I'd refund anything. I'd take the negs and move on (after blocking him). Bidders accept that sellers will get negged by some moron some time. As long as there is no history of it, I wouldn't worry about the negs.

I realize since I dont sell on ebay anymore (For precisely THIS reason), my opinion is not as objective as it could be, but honestly...

I would have told the buyer to take the items I sent him and see how far he can shove them up the shaft where the sun dont shine. If someone comes out and is blatant enough to extort you by saying I will neg you unless....he is scum, plain and simple. A DB who deserves no leniency or cooperation. He probably has done this type of things time and time before and will time and time again, either until eBay puts an end to it, or enough sellers stop caring so much about their feedback, which noone cares about nowadays anyway.

Whats to stop this tool from getting half your money back and then saying he has decided he wants a FULL refund or he will neg you. If he's that much of a jacka__ to begin with, caving into his plan only justifies his means.

Sorry to be so blunt, but I used to sell hundreds of items a month way back when, under two seperate ID's one for my business and one for my personal and I havent sold anything on ebay in a long time because of carp like this as well as ebay's BS.

    who is the buyer?
  • I know I shouldn't have done the refund but honestly I figure the $8 I'm loosing isn't worth the fight/bad feedback. I should have stood up and stuck to my return policy. I just don't sell much online and was worried I would make my long term situation/standing worse by not buckling. For what it is worth, I will be sticking by return policy and not doing partial refunds ever again. I will let everyone know the buyers ID once the situation is completely taken care of.
Thanks again for all the help and insight.

  • Please out the buyer so we can clock that person, thanks.
  • Well, I have just added the first name to my blocked bidder list. popculturetoys! was the eBayer that extorted the money from me. The jack-face had the balls to call me after I let him know that I was going to wait until I heard from ebay the proper route to go to issue the partial refund. He then explains how he believes you should go about issuing the refund, undoubtedly becuase he has had practice doing this to other ebay sellers in the past... and thank you eBay for giving him my phone number. Oh well, take your lumps and move on I guess.

I did not realize that this was about 8.00.

In that case you prolly did the right thing.

One other point, and it might be a reason this guy blew a gasket.

    9.00 shipping for parcel post?

You could have sent them priority for around that.

How much off the 27.00 in shipping did you discount?

    18.00?

Not defending this guy in any way just asking.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Grote: I noticed that too. I had the devil and angel on the shoulders and decided to take the high road... at least partially. I hadn't left feedback yet so I gave him a positive (because you have no other choice) but left "db" in the comments, childish I know but I had to get a chuckle from some part of the transaction. On a side note I got a voicemail form him today calling me a punk and telling me he has friends in the Chippewa valley area. So not only did he extort money but now he is trying to intimidate me. I just have to laugh at some people and how big they can talk when they aren't in front of you.

Steve: I do understand shipping is high but I got hit a couple times having to ship bobbleheads across country which I ended up losing money on. The total shipping for the three bobbleheads I charged was $12 so I took off $15. I understand that this shipping may be higher than normal but its not like its a hidden cost, its right there and is something that I always take into consideration when purchasing something myself.
