Contrary to a Washington Post report, legendary men's college basketball coach John Wooden (left) has not passed away. Can't believe the Post would botch a story like that.

But that's not the important thing. What's important is Wooden is listed in "grave condition" and has checked into UCLA Medical Center, according to KCAL9, a Los Angeles TV station.

Wooden, 99, isn't expected to leave the hospital. He has not eaten in the last couple of days and is very ill, according to the report.

Nicknamed 'The Wizard of Westwood,' he coached at UCLA from 1948-75 and won a record 10 national championships, including seven in a row.

The Indiana native was inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 1960 and as a coach in 1973.

One of my favorite Wooden Quotes---very hard to live up to btw--“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” and...... “Ability may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there.”

You lived a great life and tought boys how to become men..not just basketball players. Big Red must be hurting right now image

I don't think he has passed yet.
  • The Wizard of Westwood is the classiest man alive. He is a true legend. I went to one of his basketball camps when I was a kid, and to this day I am still in awe of this fine gentleman!

My favorite quote of his, "Be quick, but don't hurry."

When he passes he will be missed.

  • This is a sad day for college basketball. Coach Wooden was not just a great coach, but a tremendous human being. His life was about giving the most you can to achieve your goals and to help others.

As a kid, I got interested in college basketball and became a UCLA fan for as long as Coach Wooden coached at UCLA. Later, when I first got into coaching basketball, the first thing I did was pick up his instructional video on coaching basketball. It taught me not only the proper basketball techniques, but also the way to instill the right attitude in your players.

If I could have spent 15 minutes visiting with any sports figure from my lifetime, it would have been Coach Wooden. I'm very sorry I never got the chance to meet him.

    RIP Wizard of Westwood. image

Just to back up Scott's posting (whether true or not):

Here on WFAN radio I heard the same report of Mr. Wooden's death at age 99 yesterday. Those reporters should be SURE of things like this before reporting it on the radio!!!!!

You got a source for this story? It would be hard to be "well before" the pronouncement of JFK's death, given that it was pronounced 30 minutes after the shooting occurred.

I have checked latimes.com a few times today and have not seen his death reported yet but I have to imagine it's coming. I hope he pulls through as he is an incredible person but... it doesn't look good.

"grave" condition at 99 years old isn't a good prognosis...but it would be nice if he could at least reach triple digits.
  • I believe I read he just turned 99 this week so 100 might be pushing his luck a little bit....

He was born October 14, 1910 ... about 4 months shy of his 100th.

I'll be 42 in August and grew up watching UCLA Basketball with my late father and grandfather. Although I was very young, I still remember watching the last UCLA title with Wooden. Great memories!

It will be sad to lose him, but none of us get out of this place alive. That is something my 91 year old grandfather always tells us.

Prayers sent for John "Wizard of Westwood" Wooden and to all of his family members and friends.

Brian ... tell grandpa that he made me friggin laugh out loud when I read this. Sad that you lost your dad at a young age (I assume) but how great is it to still have your grandpa at age 42! Both my grandpas died before I was 14 years old.
