Can someone please educate me on this Mike Schmidt PSA 10 card?

While performing a search on eBay, I came across this 1988 Leaf Mike Schmidt PSA 10 card. I was a little shocked by the closing price, but then again, I noticed that the pop on this card is very low - 4 if I recall correctly.

Is the pop low due to the production run of the Leaf series for this particular year, the condition of the stock, or interest in the card (or a combination of any of the aforementioned reasons)? I suppose it could also be an avid collector looking to complete a set.

Thanks in advance.

Yep, just a combination. There are a lot of Schmidt collectors on the registry, '88 Leaf was in smaller quantities than '88 Donruss (not that that means much as there were slightly less '88 Donruss cards produced than than the current national debt number), and yes, '88 Donruss/Leaf cards were pretty flimsy. Plus the colored borders make corner and edge wear very apparent.
  • As soon as more samples hit the market, the price drops. (I know, call Captain Obvious on that observation) The first went for $200.00 plus, the second I saw went for about a hundred, and I just picked one up for a little over $30.00. Happy camper here image

There is a bit of a game to it, though. Some PSA 10s of Schmidt have risen in value, precisely because the Pops have *not* increased over the past few years. It is definitely a population game, though -- and the Leafs, in particular, were boosted as soon as they gained entrance to the Basic sets and not just the Master set.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Is there a reason why 6 months later this was brought up?

Just asking in case I missed something while away.

    Good for you.
  • Because megatron just scored what used to be a $200 card for $32.

Thankyou, I guess it would be wise for me to read all the posts and not just Marc's.
