Are cheap bat tubes any good?

Does anyone have any experience with the different bat tube makers, more meaning, are the cheap ones any good? I know some of the nicer ones have UV protection but I don't care about that and they are almost 2x the price of the cheap ones.

    Anyone?

I guess I will likely buy a case of the cheap ones....~$5.00 each shipped, compared to ~$8.50 for the name brand ones and take the chance they will suck.

  • really, you are debating between 5 and 8.5?

edited to add *I guess it depends on how many you need*

I was interested in the opinion of this thread, but the bat cubes I was looking as cost a "little" bit more.

    bcw tubes

I would use the more "expensive" ones.

The bat cubes make nice displays, but I have no desire to display any bat. I have a dozen plus Steiner certified game used bats (you know, the ones that cost 2x because Steiner said so) plus a few MLB hologram certified and some signed bats. Nothing super super cool, but pretty much all my bats are PSA DNA or Steiner and the Tubes hold the bats with paperwork neatly. If I bought the lower cost tubes...you are looking around a $100 savings....not a lot, but no need to throw a $100 away....that's another bat.

Looks like BCW sells their cases of 24 @ $5.74 each. Quite a bit cheaper then eBay sellers as BCW will also give me free shipping....so looks like that is the way to go,.

I bought the cheap ones at an autograph signing for $3 each.

I guess the answer to your question depends on what you plan on doing with them.

If you display them, buy the better ones they will look better.

If you plan on storing them, the cheap ones are great. I went to USPS.Com and ordered some of their Priority Mail Tube boxes to store them in (they cost nothing)

    I hope this helps.

It also depends on who signed the bats.

High value bats are woth the extra price.

In a sort of related note....anyone want to split a lot of a dozen plus Edgar Renteria cracked game used bats with MLB holograms? They would be very fair...around $35-40 each. Not sure what I would do with over a dozen (especiallly considering I have two uncracked now).

    Resale should be around 3x.

Well, I went ahead and picked up a case of "Saf-T-Gard" tubes. Their cases have 10 tubes and were priced along other brands with 8 tubes. Maybe a quarter cheaper then the BCW tubes...however 24 was really more then I needed. (Although as a former WSU booster I have a lot of various WSU team signed posters which would be nice to store in the clear tubes.)

I am happy with the tubes and will likely go this route again in about a month....assuming bats continue to come in at the rate they have (?).

One thing different about these tubes, compared to all other tubes I have seen, is while other tubes seal air tight, these do not. All tubes have a bump on the cap, I guess where they are molded. On these, tghe peak of the bump is a hole. It makes closing the tubes easier...but I guess if given a choice I would rather there be no hole. Not a biggie, and to make up for this, not sure if other tubes are like, I imagine they are, all the tubes came individually wrapped. So I just opened one end of each tube and have left them in the wrapper and all.

If anyone is interested you can find them on eBay searching "Saf-T-Gard MLB BASEBALL BAT TUBE HOLDER"..or just "bat tube" as there are not that many to wade through.

I remember we had some source on the list...but could not remember who.

I am debating on placing all my Steve Young cards individually in penny sleeves, top loaders and team bags. 2000+ cards. Might be looking for a couple cases of toploaders shortly. Have to decide if that is the way I am going to go and it likely is, only because it will allow me to keep all the cards in order, together. Most so, the game used with the normal cards. I would need two cases of toploaders, 2 4 row shoeboxes, plus sufficient penny sleeves and team bags. Perhaps it would be wise to add a mixture of 20-30 magnetic cases as well. Could you work a deal on something like that?
