OT: The Moose Dog is Very Very Ill

Hi All -
No, it's not me, but rather one my my three Whippets, and the one for whom my screen name is for, has taken ill. It doesn't look good and early indications are it's the "Big C" affecting her liver. Any of you out there with psychic healing powers or can put in a good word with the various deities, or even just a good thought please focus your energy on her in Los Altos CA.

First the Sharks and now this...it's been a tough week.

My thoughts are with you today. We have 2 Whippets named Teddy and Nelly and they are the most likeable dogs around. I know it's tough; but hang in there. Believe it or not....in a few minutes I'm taking the whippets with me to a card store about 10 miles away. They love to ride with me. I hope all goes well for you. My wife has had whippets all of her life. I've just got to know them the last 6 years and they are my buddies.
Also, your dog looks just like Teddy. He is going to be 10 later this year.

I have some experience with efforts to repair domestic critters.
Except in emergency situations, I don't have much confidence
in most docs; not the ones who work on humans, and not the
ones who work on other creatures. (Said lack of confidence
should be considered by you, when you contemplate whether
or not ANY of my views on docs/drugs have any merit.)
If your dog/cat/horse/cow gets hit by a car, the doc can usually
repair the animal. "Diseases" are less easy to fix.
Animals - us too - ARE what they eat. Magic pills and exotic
treatments are unlikely to reverse/cure the results of bad diets
that have taken YEARS to manifest themselves. Changing such
diets can have a "miraculous" effect on mitigating - even reversing -
those results.
The guy in the link below charges a small fee for his info; some of his
info is elementary, UNLESS you have never heard it before. His fee is
fully refundable, to folks who find his info to not be helpful.
dog repair
While I will spare NO effort/expense to fix/save an animal, I have
found that the remedies - other than surgery - that I mfg myself
are FAR superior to those from the pharma gangs. (Other folks
will have different experiences.)

Lilly has an ear infection at the moment and at her vet's office today she was checked out on the table I had my boy put down. Still upsets me.
Here is my boy:

The cancer that afflicted my dog was an extremely rare and sneaky sarcoma. Our vet told us that this type of cancer in dogs was unheard of as recently as 2004. There are cancers that dogs get that are very treatable, this one was an unlucky draw. The cells have no blood markers and they can settle anywhere in the body, with the liver and GI tract common destinations. The condition was too advanced and the cells had congregated in her liver and were literally sucking the red blood cells and the life out of her. The survival rate of this type of cancer is basically zero.
She hadn't eaten in 6 days and we had to make the very difficult decision to let her go and I stayed with her through the whole thing and beyond. She would have been 13 in July.
The Dalai Lama has said that the secret of life is to be happy. All beings from ants to humans merely seek happiness. I gave this dog the best life I could and I truly believe that she was a happy dog to the end and she was one of the best dogs ever. Thankfully, we still have two of her daughters who are wonderful dogs in their own right.
Thank you for your good thoughts, prayers and support. It really did help to read those on those nights we came back from the vet after visiting her. I loved the other dog pics too!
Mickey71 I'd love to see pics of Teddy and Nelly. Few people know what great dogs whippets are!
MULLINS5 I hope you don't give up on having dogs. It's unfortunate that we have to outlive them. I had dogs all through my school years, then there was a period of about 20 years where I couldn't have one because I was living in apartments on not making enough to live in a place that would allow them. Lilly's a cutie!
A lot of dogs go to bad homes, you gave her the best life and she was lucky to have you in it.
I'm sure I'll have more dogs later on...it's just that losing them is too hard. I know exactly how you feel.
I'd like to comment on what Storm said regarding vets. I would generally concur. One of our cats has become diabetic in the last few months. Our regular vet - great lady, good vet, well intentioned - said the automatic thing was to go to insulin shots and a high protein diet. So we have. Problem is, I'm not sure we needed to go straight to insulin. Other vets plus my own research seem to indicate DIET is the huge key - and in some cats, they actually cure themselves. With our beast he probably was headed to insulin anyway because he will NOT eat wet food which is a big key in getting them cured, but it was frustrating that we just jumped straight to insulin without going the diet route first. The good news is he's doing well and is pretty regulated.

I have two dogs. My oldest is my avatar. Her name is Lea La. (pronouced in Clapton fashion closer to lay lu). I got her from the Humane Society about 10 years ago. For many years she was argueably my best friend. It was always just me and Lea La.
About two years ago I got another dog, a puggle, but the largest in the litter so he doesn't look that pugglish. His name was originally Santa's Little Helper from the Simpsons, but it didn't take long to shorten that to Santa....his name.
Santa has been limping around all day, not sure what happened. We went for a late night walk in the park last night and he was fine....limping when I woke up this morning. He is kind of fat and is not very balanced. Add to that a lot of strength and he is a disaster waiting to happen.

My heartfelt condolences on your loss. I have a German Shepherd and four cats, all of which I have gotten as strays or from shelters. The loving home and the love you give your pets is truly appreciated by them, and I know Moose is happy to have lived her life with someone as kind and compassionate as you. RIP, old buddy.
