1974 Ryan

I wanted to get your guys opinions. I haven't been following the 1974 Ryan closely enough, but this seems like a very weak 9 to me. There seems to be a high pop of this year in PSA9/10. I'm in the market to add one to my registry set, but not sure I like what I see:

Is the stain below the Y common and considered acceptable in this grade? Are the corners on this year tough? I have a '69 Ryan with Razor sharp corners and great centering that looks significantly better than this and it only got graded a PSA 8. Any help is greatly appreciated

The bottom left corner and the stain are more than enough to make me pass on this example.

My exact thoughts ... I do not know a lot about any specifics of the '74 set, but IMO THIS IS NOT A NINE! I think that corner is poor for an EIGHT!

Terrible! image The color is bad, the eye appeal is poor, the corner look soft, parts of the card look stained, maybe even a slight tilt ....WOW!Keep looking, you'll find one a LOT nicer than this one! image

good to know. I would've just bought a 7 or 8 if this is what was typical of the '74 Ryans

I think they gave it 9 because of the centering, tough for any year Topps made a card. The corners look fine to me, but the stain could be an issue especially if it continues to grow throw time.

    Centering 9.5

    Corners 8.5

    Edges 9

Surface ??? because of the small stain, I am not sure.

Are you sure that's a stain and not on the scan? Can't imagine it getting a 9 if it is.

  • On the 1974 topps cards centering is the thing to look for! I have roughly 6,500 1974 Topps cards and all majority of cards are plagued by the centering problems and miscuts. I purchased this lot on ebay from a major 1974 Topps submitter these were his culled cards. I picked them up for the cheap though image

Am I wrong about this idea.. 1974 Topps was the first year Topps made complete sets to be purchased and as the high pop reports show is this a reason for the High populations on star cards Winfied ,Ryan cards?

Ryan, you're correct. 1974 is the first year for Topps Baseball cards to be issued all at once and not in series. They also produced a factory set that year. I'm not sure how they were distributed. Maybe thru Sears stores. I don't recall seeing factory sets prior to 1974.

From a production standpoint, I think Topps increased production in 1968 and then gave them another boost in 1974. There seems to be tons of Topps regular cards from 1968 going forward.

On that '74 Ryan 9, I've seen much worse 9's than that one.
I've seen many 9's with small grease stains/marks on them too.
They're not pretty and for some a deal breaker, but they're fairly common on many cards.

Also scans often make some corners look a little soft when they are actually sharp in person. The reverse is true too, some cards may have razor sharp corners in a scan, and in person the card might have softness or minor dings to the corners. Buyer beware.
