'83 Vending Case rip question

I'm looking for something to rip that will take a while to rip all of and won't be too expensive but has a chance at a decent return. I thought that an '83 Topps Vending Case might fit the bill. How many Gwynn's, Bogg's, Sandberg's, and other worthwhile gradable cards should be expected from an average Vending Case? Also, what is another alternative that might fit my rip criteria?

Tom , I have the top 83 set and can tell that the top dogs for that set ( Gwynn, Boggs , Sandberg , Ryan , Yount , etc) rarely showup in decent condition in the vending lots. If you have access to the 83 pop figures and see what cards have the top PSA 10 numbers, these come from primarily the vending lots.

If you decide to do this , I would pay you well for the cards I need. PM me if this happens and I can shoot a ready list off to you.--- Sonny

You can pretty much tell after 1 box what the cards will look like. If a card is OC 70/30, then pretty much all of that same card will be OC 70/30. Basically, if yr key hits look crappy from the first box.....SELL SELL SELL!!!

We need to knock out a 78 rack case rip this week, but we also have a 6 box 1983 Topps Rack Case to rip. The case looks like it just came from Topps. Hopefully we can get to that one next week.

thanks for the input guys. Sonny, if I decide to go with the '83 Topps then I'll shoot you a pm.

I've thought about going for a better box around $1000-$1500 but I've done that before and I'd like the rip to take a little longer. Thoughts?

    Vette,
Couple of years ago I got on a Unopened 83 Topps Baseball addiction for awhile. Over the course of about a year I ripped about 25-30 boxes, mostly Michigan Test and Wax with a couple of Vending and a couple of Cellos thrown in.
I did it because I liked the cards, but was hoping to make a little money on the deals. Needless to say after about 3K+, 25+ boxes later, 200-300 cards sub'd to PSA, picking up 100+ GEM 10's, and basically not being able to sell any GEM 10 commons for more than about $20 bucks each (Actually sold many of them for $5 or less). (And never got any of the Star/Money cards higher than an 8/9), I threw in the towel! Little adventure ended up a loss of about -$2K.

So just a little cautionary tale!

I bought a Grocery Rack Case, 3 Boxes, from BBCE a little while ago and had pretty decent results. The Boggs and Sandberg you bought came from that case, I had a few Sandberg 9's as well. I didn't get any gradeable Gwynn's, and I haven't gone through the cards for subs as of yet. The only downside is the cards are packed in those cello packs.

If you're looking for something that takes a while to rip, I think vending could be a bad option. Opening each pack slows it down a bit but vending you can just pound through it. Of course it's significantly cheaper so may balance out.

opening a vending case should yield between 13-15 complete sets if i recall from the days making sets of a local dealer. you get more once you merge dups from your first case.
