Registry Etiquette (eBay)

Hopefully, this won't come across as an ad - it's not intended to be. My eBay ID is different than my board ID so hopefully, that helps my case.

I have a few low pop and even some Pop 1 cards of big name players (Emmitt, Marino, Favre, etc) up on eBay. I know with the 2010 award deadline approaching, there could be some good competition for these cards.

My question is, should I email the collectors who list their emails in the set registry for these players? I've sold hundreds of cards on eBay and never done that, but with times like they are, I don't want to leave any money on the table.

Is it worth it? Could it hurt more than help? Would you be irritated if you received an email giving you a heads up something for your registry?

  • fwiw I find those emails beneficial and always check out the auctions of those sending me notifications. I don't see it hurting your offerings at all and if i was collecting I find them welcomed. That's just one opinion thou.

Polite, thoughtful emails do help (i.e. "Sorry for the intrusion.... list specific card info, not just a link to your ebay listings - and mention that you've been on this board since 2006 and your ebay history too)

Bull in a china shop emails do the opposite (Hi, thought you might be interested in these auctions...here's a link)

Taking an extra 5 minutes to do it right makes a HUGE difference.

I get them every once and a while, they don't bother me at all. As a matter of fact I appreciate them.

  • I agree that done right it is a welcomed notice, hate to miss a chance on something that is needed. good luck

I've contacted registry folks before and had a sale off ebay each time I did it.

If a registry member detested being notified, they wouldn't include their email addresses. I think you're fine.

The ones that get me are those that tell me about every PSA 9 they have that would be an upgrade for me. Fine, except my set is entirely PSA 8. Now, if I have a set that was all PSA 8 with one card in PSA 7, I would TOTALLY appreciate the seller telling me they've located the one card that I would actually bother to upgrade (pipe dream, I know).

I get them all the time but normally when I respond I get the old "already sold" line.

Have made a few sales and have purchased a few cards through email contact on the registry. As said before, if someone does not like the emails, they will not have it listed.

    good luck with your sales.

A bit late, but...I would certainly contact those who provide their email addresses and who may well need what you have to offer. I get contacts from time to time, I appreciate the emails and have made deals this way.

So far the response has been overwhelmingly positive except for 1 person who had actually had seen this thread. Some cursing and ranting about spam - oh well.

Thanks for the help, I know it's working as I'm tracking click throughs on the links, and I'm getting good response.

I have a bunch of sets , mostly for our sons but some for me , and I get 1-2 offers a week for items for sale. I LOVE it when someone has something I really need.

If I were you , I would take the time to do a little homework about the person who you are contacting , to see if you have something that they need. It REALLY gets on my nerves , when someone offers some krappy cards (low grade in a high grade set) or cards I no longer need.

I also wanted to add that I get 2-3 offers a month for items IN my sets , that others want. Its normally bottom feeders looking for an unemployed slob , hard up for money , looking to give their cards away. I am not that person.
