Good point.
I did not look at it that way. I hope the 100 plus bidders are about helping people on hard times and not looking for an investment.

...and a 'hands on' Crosby lap dance.
Obviously a great item to own and if you've got the extra dough I couldn't blame someone for picking it up. If anyone's look for a nice piece on the cheap Steve Nash's Los Suns Gamer and shoes are only $4k...
way less of a waste than spending a bunch on a 60s or 70s registry set... I mean the hockey jersey worn by your TEAM CAPTAIN winning the GOLD MEDAL for your country? hell, that's awesome! What a sweet collectible, and I dont even give 2 rats about hockey.
Don't forget that Crosby is now a hockey GOD in Canada, due to his Gold-Medal-winning goal against the U.S.A. team.
What he does in the NHL is absolutely irrelevant. This year's Olympic hockey tournament was HUGE in Canada.....it was probably the most important event of the year.
Crosby does not have to do anything else ever again, and he will still be a GOD forever-more.
Great investment if you are a sports bar owner in Canada. You could write off the item as a business expense (possibly, not "up" on Canadian tax law), you could probably get someone from a local paper come out and write an article about the item...that along with framing it and hanging it in the restaurant could bring in some business.
I don't care for Crosby, but that is a nice item. He will be in the running for some career records, perhaps Gretzky's all-time goals, and will win 3-5 more cups to add to his one as well as 2-3 more Olympic medals to add to his two gold medals. Not sure how tax write off would be if it is a Canadian bidder, and think the jersey is well worth the 35k price tag as of now. I would want to know if the nhlpa will have more for sale as if I were to spend 35k+ on a jersey, I would want it to be on another game. Wonder how much the game winning jersey would bring at auction? Probably going to the Hockey Hall.
You guys act like the people buying this stuff have a relationship with money that even remotely resembles your own. Have you ever met someone-- by which I mean, spent an evening with-- someone who was worth $5 or $10 million (or more)? It's like they live on a completely different planet.
Here's a way to put it in perspective: Let's say someone homeless in Haiti found out that you had just spent $30 on a T-shirt at a ball game, and explained to their friends how you had just 'flushed $30 down the toilet'. The amusement you would get from hearing that is the same as the amusement that these high-rolling collectors derive from reading threads like this one.
I'm saying Crosby is not worth the money his items get.
Crosby will NEVER break Gretzky's all-time goals or any other records. It took him five years to score 50 in a season. Total points are way down compared to the 80's and 90's.

I agree with BooPotts. When I see the money some people drop on cards I am dumbfounded!!! But, I make less than $50k a year and I have to budget my collecting accordingly. This is why I cannot compete with Donald Spence and Dmitri Young. I can spend $2500-$5000 a year on stuff if I budget things right. Well, a person that lives on $20k a year would think my $2500-5000 is insane! So, $35k? To me, a fortune. To a Canadian multi-millionaire that wants the joy and pleasure of putting the hottest jersey in Canada on his wall, that $35k is chump change. It might go for double that. And as much as I can't stand Crosby and the Pens, he is going to be around for a long time and is going to put up some big numbers barring injury.

And Mickey Mantle holds how many meaningful MLB records?
You're acting like someone is buying this for an 'investment'. There are plenty of people in this world who can pop off for a number like 35 grand while playing around on their laptop as they sit on the can, and for people like that the investment issue is a non starter.

Disagree on the big numbers. Look at Gretzky and Lemieux's stats. Those are big numbers. He'd have to play double the seasons those guys played. A 100 plus points a year is good now a days...

That madoff auction was a scam. The cards weren't his but were property seized from someone else. It's important to note that it's not the Gold Medal jersey but an earlier game. Sweet item that I, as a hockey-but-not-Crosby fan, would be proud to own. He's a future HOF'er, Cup winner, Gold Medal winner, blah blah blah. Super, super item.

Agreed. Crosby has no shot at reaching Gretzky's point totals. Crosby has 506 points right now - just 2351 short of Gretzky. At his career pace of 1.36 points per game, Crosby would have to play more than 1700 more games to reach that total WHILE maintaining that pace. Ain't. Gonna. Happen.

My point is... way to much money for a guy that will NEVER break any NHL records, might not ever win another Cup.
I think you could pick up a GU Gretzky, Orr, Howe or Hull for that price or less.
I guess my point is people pay way to much for newer rookie cards / autos of guys that are not HOFers.
