Yard sales cards

Hi everyone this year i said i want to stop by more yard sales.
Today on my way to work i hit a yard sale, first one of the year. I looked around and they had some cool things but nothing i wanted then i walked up to the house and look at the small table with some small thing on it. I see a small stack of cards, 12 UD Griffey Rookies 1 1984 Fleer Puckett 1 1983 Boggs Rookie and 1 Brett Hull opc Rookie.
The guy gave one one great deal on the lot.

Then he says his girl friend has a large group of old cards from her uncle. I gave them my number, boy i sure hope they call soon.

  • OK, I'll be Captain Obvious and ask. How much did you pay and could you show us some scans? Nice buy for sure, and hope the other deal comes through for you. Doug

Edited to ad. What the heck is a "smallon"?

I guess I go to the wrong yard sales because every one I go to the sellers act like they've got rare cards. The last one I went to, they had some cards with the best card being a Clemens rookie in about 7 condition at best, and he wanted 50 bucks for it. Too pathetic for a counteroffer on a card in that condition I didn't really want anyway.

That's great you found an interesting source for collectibles.

I think the bottom line is it's an odds game, there are no posts here about the many MANY thousands of times we all go to yard and estate sales and strike out...but that one in so many thousands gets lucky, finds something good at a bargain, and posts about it...and I enjoy reading about the good fortune...just wish it would happen to me once in awhile. LOL

I hit garage sales every Thursday and Friday over my lunch at work. I look for ANYTHING I can flip on ebay...no only cards, but anything that I think might garner some bucks on ebay. Almost everyone knows that cards were a big deal at one time so they think they are sitting on a gold mine and their prices reflect that. I did hit a sale last year where they had most (Topps, Fleer, Donruss) of the 1988-1992 complete sets at $2/set. I bought the 1988 Fleer, 1989 Fleer and 1989 Donruss just to get the rookies out of them and see if there was anything gradable.

I also had my annual garage sale last weekend and we made $1,350. Mostly selling kids clothes. I did sell a virtually new poker chip set (the heavy one with case) for $20 that I bought earlier this year at a garage sale for $1.

There are still deals to be had at sales, but it's not like it used to be.

  • I have probably atttended 1000 yard sales/garage sales/estate sales in the past 18 months and have bought exactly three collections of cards at them. I have bought plenty of other sports mem but cards are not easy to find there.

I actually discussed that with Bill Huggins about a year ago and he said it's because we trained a whole generation about the value of cards but not the same for the mem.

Any time I see cards at yard/garage sales, they're asking $100 for a box of 1988 Donruss. I stopped going to them.

    meh

yard sales & garage sales = false advertising. I've never once been able to purchase either a yard or a garage. Getting tired of the bait & switch from these small-time crooks.

The great thing about 89 Upper Deck was their quality control, centering is awesome.

  • The Kirby card was a great find, nice centering on it.

it's just hard to tell if they were part of the original print run or the millions UD printed when the card was hot!

i hit the motherload at one tag sale about 5 years ago. I went with my wife and almost passed on the box because i figured there would be crap in them but my wife convinced me to buy it because the whole box was only $4.00 and it would give me something to do over the weekend. In the box I got 300-400 different commons and minor stars from 1959-1967, 2 1963 Tops Pete Rose rookies, the complete 1959 Fleer Ted Williams set (except #68) , an almost complete 1964 topps coins insert set ( I was missing about 30 coins but the ones I got were in mint condition with no rust, and various stars like a 1958 Topps Mantle all star card in poor shape and a 1960 Hank Aaron card. Istopped collecting a few years back but after picking up this box I got back into the hobby and spent many thousands of dollars since then. I know I will never see this kind of deal again. I will scan some pictures when I get home from work. I still cannot believe the whole box was only $4.00
