NewP 1904 Bremen 2 Mark

I've been looking round for one of these for a short time and they do come up for auction fairly often.
When I saw this one though- it had my name on it!
I could care less about the grade as I bought it simply for the nice light champagne toning and it looks to be pretty lustrous, and I don't plan to compete in any registry sets with this.
One year type, mintage 100k, etc...

Nice little addition to my Hanseatic City Empire German collection

I really like these. Cropped it to highlight the crisp strike and design.

Yes for sure, another one year type as well. 1906, mintage: 41,000, Mint: Hamburg
Tough to find and I believe the going rate for BU is about $600 give or take...
    Soon!
    Thanks Zohar! Nice present. image

I wonder why Bremen never made any 3 Marks?

LOL, Yes I approve! Nice pick up! But the 5 mark is a 2 year issue, 1904 and 1906, not reflected in the standard catalog of German coins by Krause, it only lists 1906. I never thought about the lack of a three mark, I guess I am going to have to go thru the states and see who else didn't mint 3 marks... Maybe it is like hotdogs and bun packages? 8 in one, 10 in the other... Takes a lot of both to come out even! image

    A Very Nice Coin BTW...

I have never heard of this, I am aware they also made 600 proof 5 Marks in 1906 but if what you say is true they must be quite rare to say the least! Have you ever seen one- If possible can you send me a link?
    Thanks,

OK, I dug out the old book again, My 1989 Krause, shows a 1904 5 mark at 5500.00 in Unc, a 1906 is 255.00 in Unc. I am missing a number of Krause books from 1987 to 2007 so I can't give you a date when it (1904) disappeared from the listings. 1989 was the last book to combine 1801 to the then current date of 1989 and is a very valuable tool for me to get an idea of rarity of world coins. Prices may be out of date but mintages and the prices from 20 years ago can give me an idea of how likely I am to come across them in my travels. I am going to do a Google search and see what I can find out, I am now interested in finding more information on this! BTW, the coin pictured in my '89 Krause is a 1906 for the 5 mark...

  • I guess at those prices in 1989 they must be extremely rare! I searched Heritage archives and pop reports- nothing!
I did find a few pics for you to look at though~ image
How do you like this one?

This one looks ok to me as well... image

    Very nice, Jim.

Is it just me, or is there an awful lot of German States stuff in OGHs? (An awful lot by comparison with newer holders, I mean.)

You said it! I am on the same bat station as you! WOWSERS!!! Those are incredible, makes my avatar look a little pale in comparison. I have looked high and low for a 1904 5 mark with no luck, maybe my trusty crusty and a little dusty old Krause had an oo boo? Krause making a mistake? Nahhhhh... Maybe omitting an entire country from time to time but listing a non existent coin as gospel? I shudder in just thinking about a never completed collection based on the facts, and just the facts man... On a positive note though, I placed a 300 dollar down payment on a Bremen 20 mark I found while looking for that elusive 1904 five mark, and with a mere 900 dollars more I can take delivery! Yikes, my third 4 figure purchase is now in progress... Let's see. 2+5 minus the 3 equals $@$ to the second power and then carry the one and add infinite goals to the second degree giving a broad spectrum of desire.
    The final tally is?

I have noticed quite a few come up lately for some reason, maybe someone sold off their collection- or a sign of the times?
Rick, looking forward to seeing your new Bremen 20 Mark, don't forget to share!

OK, so I maxed out my credit card but it should be here Friday. More pics to come after it arrives! Did I say I really dislike the holder?

PS- sweet goldie, Rick. I've had German Imperial gold but never German State gold. Fergodsake pay down that credit card! (Said the hypocrite who's also skating dangerously close to the upper limits with his, haha. But most of mine went into my stupid automobile, not coins. I wish it had been the latter.)

You can always rescue that thing from the "Prongs of Death" and get it in good PCGS plastic later. (Said the Kool-Aid drinker).

Isn't that the truth! Those are amazing pieces.
  • Super coin Jim. I would get into this series if I could ever show any kind of
    restraint once I get started.

    German material is pretty strong right now isn't it? I see a lot of it on ebay;
much from Greg Margulis, and it's a pretty compelling series from the standpoint
of design and the fact that high grade material is usually available at
    reasonable prices.

I particularly like the cameo proofs; probably a huge sleeper-if indeed
    they are "sleepers"....image
No,no- the kids and the cat are all right honey.
It's just that I got my PCGS grades.

Thanks CCN! I think some German material is hot right now, especially proofs whether they be pre-1871, Empire, or Weimar period.
That NGC Bremen PF66UCAM 5 Mark sold a few years back for around $1,265.00- Definitely a looker!
Marguli auctions all tend to do well as he seems to have some very high quality material, always a pleasure to deal with too!
If you ever do decide to collect German there's lots of history there and you'll never be bored with the very attractive coinage they made throughout the ages (except for the Nazi and modern stuff which doesn't appeal to me personally- jmo).
Thank you all for the kind words, nice to see what I collect is appreciated by so many- well some of it anyway... image
Rick, congrats on the nice pickup, looking forward to more pics and I agree- those prongs are horrible! (said another Kool-Aid drinker)
