1954 - 1956 Topps

So wife is at Stained Glass Class and is talking to friend about hobbies. He tells her he collected baseball cards in the 50's. She tells him I used to collect, grade and sell on ebay. H2 dropped about 3O off this morning. Mantle Aaron Robinson Koufax Kaline Kaline Killibrew Ford Williams Banks and the list goes on. He has boxes of these and wants me to have them graded and sell them splitting the sales. He even had 3 Mantle 1954 Dan Dee Cards. How to proceed? Dale

    Do what he said.

I did the same for my mailman friend. I put up the dough to have them graded.

When they sold I gave him 60% of the net. Sometimes a tad more.

An added benefit is instead of taking all cash you could get some nicer cards.

    Good for you.
  • Here is the first one - 1954 Dan Dee Mickey Mantle. I have two more but they have creases.

I would grade all the DanDee's regardless of condition, for authentication purposes.
As far as the other cards go, some look lower to mid grade. I'd definitely send in any that will sell for $500+, other lower grade cards I'd probably just sell raw with detailed front and back scans, but take them out of the screwdowns first.

Cool find, but they aren't gonna grade what you want them to.

  • Dale, good looking cards. Fortunate for you the best condition card of the bunch is the Mantle Dan Dee card. Definitely get that one graded and as someone said, get the other two graded also. Here is my opinion on how they would grade.

    Mantle Dan Dee-- 5
    '55 Robinson--4 or 5
    '55 Aaron--3
    '54 Williams 250 1st-- 4 or 5 OC
    '54 Williams 2nd--4.5-5
    '54 Williams 3rd--5 OC
    Both '54 Williams #1---4
    '55 Williams--3 or 3.5

Like I said, JMO. Good luck Doug
  • Thanks for the comments.

I sent the one Dan-Dee Mantle in today for grading.

One quick question. If you send in a card a value it to the lower level ($10.00 vs. $30.00), will they grade it if its higher than the $10.00 fee you paid on it? I did the $30.00 on the Dan-Dee card.

Value and estimating value is quite subjective.

Wouldn't it be better for you to send them the insurance amount on the high end (which is pretty cheap) and then have them bill you prior to them sending you back the card based on the grade that they give it?

P.S. when I get some card savers, I'll get them out of the screw downs and post some better scans. As I said earlier, the plastic screw downs have along of dings and scratches on them and you can't get a good look at them.

  • Those cards are great!!! image

If you are a collector of those particular cards, I would just give him half the money they would sell for, get them graded and keep them. If he told you he would split down the middle and you really want the cards, I would just keep them and give him half of market value.

    Good luck!

The Mantle is pretty nice, definitely grade that one. The others will grade at low to mid grade levels.

Good luck with the Mantle Dan Dee...image
