It's fun for the sellers when 2 nuclear bids show up.

The registry is a powerful drug.

  • Yes, when you let your ego get involved in your registry collecting, it can cost you a fortune. Been there and done that!!!! Hopefully I have become rehabilitated, and I am back in it for the fun of collecting.

As a competitive Ripken collector, I've over-paid for my fair share of 10s. Then again I've also benefited from selling to registry chasers. I've recently found it to be way more exciting and gratifying to sub your own in the quest for all 10s. Not only can you feel proud of a 10 that you subbed, but you can also make some money selling your extras/doubles. I love this hobby. image

That's why I collect vintage in low grade.

Even most pop 1 modern PSA 10 Thomas cards cost less than $30. Not much registry competition.

unFRIGGINbelievable ... Two guys think it's worth a GRAND .... and NOBODY ELSE thinks it's worth even a hundred bucks. REGISTRY = DRUG!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

As eye-popping as this is when it occurs, it isn't a done deal until the transaction is complete.

Let's hope buyers remorse doesn't set in.

Sounds to me more like two guys submitting "win at any cost" bids, expecting it to go in the $100-$150. Only both guys submitted similar type bids and it ends up at $1000. I doubt either guy thinks the card is actually worth $1000.

If he paid a GRAND, it must be worth it to THAT person so he can get a little bump in THE REGISTRY.

I've never said "I think something is worth x, but I'll pay 10x for it because I've gotta have it!" I always pay what something is worth (maybe double, tops, if it's a rarity), or else I won't own it. I think it's a good strategy.

    A grand for a PSA 8 trapped in a PSA 9 holder...

I remember when the first 1988 Topps PSA 10 Kirby Puckett card came up on eBay. It went for over a grand. It was definitely a case of the top two collectors going all-out for a 1-of-1 at the time...and now there's 9 of 'em...
