etopps... quality? quanity? and grading

Hi I have a question for everyone who deals with etopps and submitting them for grading...
I just got my first etopps card inhand recently. The card is horribly OC.
YUCK

Question 1
Are most etopps cards OC or have issues and are very difficult to find in Gem Mint condition?
Question 2
How many etopps cards should one have to find a possible Gem Mint card?
I was thinking 5 but maybe I might need more...
What has been your experience with this?
My goal is to have 11 different Derek Jeter cards all PSA 10 etopps cards. Is this possible?
TIA
Tim

No, for the most part... all eTopps cards are in pretty awesome condition and well centered. However, 2006, is the exception. The centering that year was horrible for the most part. Honestly, since you are not dealing in large lots of cards... I would absolutely recommend getting on the phone with their customer service on Monday and voicing your displeasure with the centering of the "MINT" cards (that's how they advertise them) and demand replacement(s). And by replacement, I mean on their dime too. If you press the issue, they will email you a UPS return label to cover return shipping.
Answer 2:
Typically, the majority of eTopps cards will come to you in-hand in MINT or GEM MT condition. I'd say it's not unrealistic to expect 60-70% of your cards to grade out GEM MT 10. Subbing 2-3 of each issue in all likelihood will result in at least one 10 of each... if not all 10's for any given issue. The biggest think to look for is print defects. With the refractor like finish and multi-coating... you will sometimes find cards with print spots that are just void of color (primarily on 2001-2003 cards). Most new stuff, with the exception of centering in 2006, comes to you pretty darn perfect.
Answer to the unasked question:
eTopps is easily the finest quality card product put out by Topps. Hands down, not even close. Whether or not base cards are really worth the $4.00-$9.50 you might pay at IPOS... that's for the collector to self determine. This will be their 10th year of baseball, and personally, I'm rather surprised the concept and cards haven't caught on more in the hobby. Hell, Beckett still doesn't recognize them as true sportscards. They'll grade them all day long and give you deals on grading them that PSA won't... yet they won't classify them as true cards because they don't come in packs. I thought it was the 21st century... and I'm pretty darn certain all the one's I have in-hand are actual cards... but I must be wrong.

I think that is likely true.

<< <i>wow, the reply to the OP has sure had enough etopps grape drank. They store these cards, uncased in a plain shoebox. Until someone requests delivery. Good luck with the 01, which now have to be encapsulated in the GIANT OVERSIZED PACK HOLDERS. I'd seriously consider another set. Maybe one that will be around another 10 years.(ames, kmart, etc) there is a reason they are so cheap, lack of QC. And not being a mainstream product; thus no true rookies; except to the clueless etopps faithful. Who are fighting against themselves to gain a profit of fifteen cents on flip day. These are the same people risking their 401k, based on what MLB is saying is a RC, not the true hobby definition.
RIP eflopps >>
Unfortunately I can't concider another set because PSA set registry considers these etopps cards as "base cards" in Derek Jeter's Basic and Collectors Issues set. I have NO idea why since etopps cards are such a pain in the arse to acquire let alone crack open then grade in hopes a PSA 10 comes back. Unless someone can convince PSA to change their stance on them being a base card. I have NO choice but to obtain them.
But the grape drank view of the eTopps supporter is way off! A PSA 10 is more likely a 5% chance at best. These cards have a horrible QC in place! Anyone who tells you otherwise , has dipped in the eFlopps KOOLAid!
These cards are not even RC; due to them not being offered in packs!
Please be aware that the PRO etopps arguementer
(2000exploer) is somehow a partner with the brand , so his response is not impartial, as he has a monetary gain for talking the soon to be extinct brand up!)
If you want a "real" capture of the eTopps markets, send me a PM. Asking an eTopps affiliate(2000explorer) will give you the answer the company wants! Even though he is still losing money; this "affiliate'' offered 15 Bob Gibson autoed cards a months ago; and they are still for sale.
To me, this seems as a person that lacks trust! Especially since he is overcharging for the auto!
You could have received this auto with an inscription for less than this shyster is charging!
Guess why he still has product left, a month later?

Skidlow if you have a problem with someone either work it out with them or take it off the MB's - Eric (epatmythes) is one of the good guys on these boards he's helped me out many times.
and it's not that hard to pull a 10 on an etopps card - I'd say I'm well over 50% subbing them and I've made some nice money to the registry hunters.
People either like eTopps cards or they don't I think they are the best cards topps produces and they make great cards to get autographed.
the '01 to '03 are going to be tougher to get 10's on if they've been in hand a long time. Those cases do something to the surface of the cards after a while. Take your cards out of port and get them out of those holders and in to penny sleeves.
I've had about a 20% success rates on Etopps cards getting 10s. But never on an '01
