Upper Deck Not Paying Players for autographs?

According to this NY Times article; it has not been.

Could this be the death knell for UD since autographs are basically the only type of item they can insert into packs?

Its been a sad decline for the Company that changed it all in 1989....

Bad choices, maybe dishonest ones, have lead to their demise....

I hope Topps has the ability and trustfullness to bare the torch alone...

It's only a matter of time before UD is gone, especially now that they have lost both MLB and NFL. I cant remember if they still have NBA but I know they still have NHL which is not enough for them to survive.
  • I thought Paninni is the basketball exclusive now.

Ah, you are right Bobby. I forgot that. So looks like all they have is NHL now? The ship at UD is sinking fast.

That isnt even mentioning the MLB lawsuit and the makers of Yugioh lawsuit. I believe they settled with MLB but the Yugioh is still a pending lawsuit?

Upper Deck settled with Konami in January.
  • How are they going to survive then?? Not too many current players sign for free ... The majority of modern wax busters are only buying for the hits of autos jersey and bat cards, right? Why would anyone buy the products? Imo

The market does have a place for non-insert, non jersey, non autoed cards. Look at Topps, they survived a long time without it. Starting with the basics might get UD going again.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

Sorry if I came off as a fan of the game used auto stuff.... * I am really not a fan at all! I was giving my opinion on the people opening packs for the hits to re-sell. I think that the basics would be great again without any non base set inserts . Any else think Topps should bring back the older card stock and a piece of bubble gum in a pack (*cheap packs) and only release a handful of sets... instead of more than a dozen..
Just a test run would be cool..

    Anyone think the same thing??

    Not me.

Maybe, if packs were cheap, the no-insert product would work.

Most folks gotta have a little gambling/profit incentive to spend
    money on pricey packs.

They can always do World Cup Soccer cards again. I knew they would have an ace up their sleeve for a rainy day. Oh wait Panini has that also

I cant see Upper Deck surviving for much longer.

They had to be in the hole if they were conterfeiting Yu-Gi-Oh cards and now they have lost 3 major settlements in a 3 month period, and to top it off their main sorces of income are being taken away.

It is not looking good fo UD.

Yep no more high end 800 a pack UD crap. Even though this stuff does have a place in the hobby IMO if UD left Topps should really think about dialing up their high end stuff another notch. Their Triple Threads idea is getting old and looked like crap this year.

Even with their Heritage themed sets those need much better autos and more of them to make me want to really bust a box.
