Just Got Back From The Masters

Fellas,

I just got home from the Masters and all I can say is WOW!!!!! It was much more than a golf tournament, it was an expierience. This was my first time and I was not disappointed. I got there about 8:30 am and hung around the practice tees for about a hour. Next was off to walk the course for a couple of hours and found myself at Amen Corner just as the first group got to the 11th green. Now the great thing about where I was standing was you could see the approach shot to the 11th green, the tee shot and green on # 12 and the tee shot on the 13th hole without moving more than 5 steps. I was standing right by the rope not to mention the bathrooms and vending area was right behind me. Well, that did it for me and I watched every group come through.

Once Mickelson tee'd off on 13, I went over to the 17th tee box. There you could see the groups teeing off on 16. The 16th green is right behind the 17th tee box so you could see them putt on 16 and tee off on 17. I was literally 8-10 feet from Fred Couples, Tiger and Mickleson as they tee'd off (directly in front of them). By the way, Tiger is absolutely ripped.

Once Phil tee'd off, I went to 18 but the crowd was already 30 people deep so I went on up to the front and watched it on the TV. Just an absolute joy to witness. Here are a few things I found interesting:

1.) TV doesn't do the course justice. It is absolutely beautiful. It doesn't look real.....in a good way.
2.) I didn't realize how much elevation there is at Augusta. There are alot of hills.
3.) There are absolutely NO weeds....NONE. I can say that the grounds are Perfect.
4.) The people, spectators and workers were as nice as they could be. Everybody was friendly and talked to you. The workers actually made you feel like they were glad you were there.
5.) The food was cheap. Pimento sandwichs were $1.25, coke/water was $1.50 and beer was $2.75. That was crazy.
6.) Augusta is efficient. The lines were long in the vending areas and bathrooms but they went fast.
7.) Absolutely no drunks or rude behavior. Great place to take your family.
8.) They had people working the restrooms (4-5 people) and they were clean and didn't smell.
9.) The place was quiet, even when no one was playing. When someone did play, all you could hear were the birds.
10.) Finally, just an awesome expierence. One of the top 5 things I have ever done. Would go back in a second.

Anyways, just wanted to tell everyone and hopefully if you haven't been you will get a chance sometime.

My favorite of the year. That place is so GREEN. Your so lucky. I like how the grass grows into the creeks and ponds.

    And Phils my favorite player.

    Do you live in Augusta?

I live in Charleston, SC which is about 2.5 hours away. You are right about how green it is. It looks like the grass is painted on. I have never seen anything like it in my life.

I worked in Augusta for about 3 weeks in '76 as a fill-in manager for a restaurant chain I was working for at the time. I drove by the course one day just to see the place. The tall, I think they are Cyprus trees in front of the place keeps one from getting even a glimpse of the course. I was very dissapointed at the time.

Have only been to Augusta one time since. I bought a new T'Bird in the early 90's and wanted to try it out. Drove to Augusta to see out local Gastonia Rangers play Augusta (single A teams). On my next visit to see the Rangers at home the team manager gave me a ball signed by all members of the team. They said they appreciated our making the trip. Sorry for getting off subject.

    Did he buy?

Tiger is such a drama queen. He over reacts to every bad shot. Every bad swing the club is flying out of his hand or he limps like a man with one leg.

Yes he's still the best player in the world image

One other observation that I forgot to mention. It seemed like the older crowd, say 50 and up (I am not saying 50 is old, just older) was not rooting for Tiger. They were pulling for Couples and Phil. Most of the people under 50 were pulling for Tiger. Tiger was getting huge applauses and roars. My opinion was that most people put all the tabloid BS behind them and wanted to see him play.

I agree. My description really doesn't do Augusta justice. It's one of those things where you have to be there to fully appreciate it. Kinda like being a parent, you don't really know what it's like until you have kids.

    Great write-up. Thanks for sharing.
  • I don't really follow golf, but it seems like Augusta is far underrated vs the world series, NBA finals, etc.

I guess the superbowl will always be the #1 sporting event, but Augusta must be up there. Seems like it would be even a better experience than the Kentucky Derby, or one of the tennis majors.

I would dare say that Augusta National is the most meticulously cared for and groomed sporting venue in the world. They work on the course for like 10-1/2 months of the year. After the Masters is over the memebers are allowed to play for the next month and then it starts getting groomed for the next years event. I can't think of anything else that even compares with this.

The Super Bowl is not even close to being number # 1 - That beloings to the event coming up in 60 or so days - The FIFA World Cup.

I enjoyed wantching the Masters - great report form Augusta, cincyredlegs !

I was at the Masters this weekend as well. This was my first visit and will not be my last. I am hooked. Everything Mark said and then some. I can't think of a more beautiful place on this planet. I will be doing everything in my power to ensure that this becomes an annual tradition for me, at the expense of all other sporting events I like to attend throughout the course of the year. The Masters blew everything I have been to out of the water.

The best golf tournament I ever went to was the 1991 US Open. I would love to go to the Masters, that is freaking awesome.

Great story, and glad you enjoyed the Masters so much! Sounds like a great time!

Not to derail, but hopefully someone can answer this for me. I’m not a huge golf fan, but the only golf event I have ever been to in person was the final day of the 1999 Ryder Cup. Yes, I understand what a huge event this was, and I was fortunate enough to be present for the huge charge the US made on the final day.

But, unlike other sporting events, I was bothered by how little of it I got to see. You’d be watching the 11th hole, and hear about someone making a birdie on 14. Or you’d have a good view for the tee shot, but watch a green for that same hole from 300 yards away. I was comparing it to going to a baseball game, but only getting to see the 3rd and 7th innings.

Please help me out – I’d like to attend another golf event in person at some point – but how do you best watch it and not feel like you’re missing out on tons of stuff going on around you which you can’t see?

That moves it up my list of things I want to do! Very cool. Especially like the $2.75 beer! They could charge $12.75 and people would still buy it! That's pretty cool!

Scooter - I agree that you cannot see the whole tournament. Some people like to follow their favorite golfer and others like to hang out at a specific hole. For me, at least for Augusta, Amen Corner was the perfect spot to watch the Masters. You got to see everyone and see three holes played (arguably the most hallowed three holes in all of golf). The other thing with the Masters is the expierience. It is so much more than just a golf tournament. I highly recommend you go.

Larry - Concerning the vending. I am ashamed to admit it but I had the following from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm:

    (2) pimento cheese sandwichs
    (2) chicken breast sandwichs
    (1) bbq sandwich
    (7) beers
    (4) cokes
    (4) waters

Total $ spent - $38 (probably $125-$150 at any other sporting event)
Total weight gain - 10 lbs.

having lived in Northeast Georgia all of my life, I've had the priviledge of attending 10-12 practice rounds and a couple of tourney rounds. It never gets old. I started playing golf around 7 years of age and played in junior tourneys, high school, college, and then several mini-tour events. I'd give my left arm to play Augusta. Everything that's been said is true. It's amazing that there can be a piece of property like that with NO BLEMISHES. It's truly astonishing.

    Congrats to Philly.

Also, any other human would have shot 80+ if they hit the ball like Tiger did yesterday and he shot 69!!
  • If I may ask, what does it cost to attend? I had been on the Masters website and saw applications being taken for 2011 but no information. Thanks, Dave

I have heard this mentioned on Masters TV coverage in the past and have read it also. I may noy be exact on the 1 month but it would be close. I have also read that there are only like 3 members that are from Georgia. I guess it's a presitige thing. Will try to look this up in a little and will post back. As impossible as it seems, I could be wrong.

I just tried to look it up on line. Best I can tell the course is closed from June until October.. Sorry for posting incorrect information. Was doing it from my 61 year old memory. No intention to mislead anyone. Maybe someone can find more information than I could. I am at work and filters block a lot.

LOL, I was embarassed to post that I consumed:

    3-Turkey and Cheese Sandwiches
    2-Cokes
    2-Bottles of Water
    1-Pack of Aspirin

    Total Spent $ 11

I did spend almost $400 in ther merchandise area though. It was so busy there, it was like a liscense to print money in the merchandise area.

Tourney Badges are unavailable but if they were they are $200 per day per badge. They have been sold out since 1972, at which time a WAITING list was created and then subsequently closed in 1978. In 2000 the waiting list was reopened for a short period of time and then subsequently closed again. I have no idea how to get regular all week tourney badges unless you purchase from a source like EBAY, Stubhub, ticket broker, or have a friend with badges. As for practice roiund tickets, you can request an application for tickets from the Masters. Its a lottery format every year, if you are chosen, you have the right to purchase tickets to any of the days: Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

Matt - I agree with you on the merchandise. I went in to get a polo shirt and hat. The store was just jam packed and you really couldn't look at anything for more than 3 seconds unless you wanted to get run over. The shirts were $80 which was more than I really wanted to spend. So I picked up a nice hat for $24.

    Thanx Mark.

I was stationed at Ft Gordon - Augusta - and I have to agree - the course is incredible! Alot of the courses in the area are really nice also.

Unless something changed - getting tickets for the rounds is practically impossible - they're handed down from family member to family member.

The practice rounds are more accessible.

I'm not a golf fan - but do enjoy watching the Masters - just because of the impeccable management of the course.

I've done the lottery for practice round tickets the past couple of years, but with no luck. I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure once you are on the list, they keep sending the application to you. Well, I moved, and I dont think it got forwarded, so I missed out on the lottery one year. So I have been in the lottery for practice tickets the maybe 4 of the past five years or so.

My uncle has been in the lottery for practice round tickets for about 20 years now, and he has been awarded them twice. It seems as though he gets them about once every 10 years. If I recall, the practice rounds are pretty cheap; maybe $15-$20 per ticket?

a friend of mine sent me this over the weekend on his trip there...don't know what hole.... practice green?? You can see the leaderboard in the background. Or at least looks like one.
