Rose vs. Unitas which one? Opinions wanted please

I just had a discussion with a friend of mine. Which card is the better card to buy/own, 63 Topps Pete Rosa PSA 8 or a 57 Topps John Unitas PSA 8? What does the board think?

Personally I can't stand Rose's rookie card, probably the ugliest one ever in the history of rookie cards.

Rose all day, Id put money on it!
  • the johnny u is a great looking card
  • I think more long term power in the Rose.

Maybe one day he gets into the HOF????

You'd probably never guess who I'd pick. Love both but, big shock, I'd go with Unitas.

  • Personally, I'd go with the Unitas. He just doesn't have that "controversy" clouding his legacy,

and the Unitas card is much better looking than the disembodied heads Rookie Stars card (obviously).

I see some nice PSA 7 Unitas cards on eBay in the 600 to 800 bucks range.

Maybe you could get a 7 for both cards, rather than an 8 for just one. image

Unitas. Vintage football is still undervalued.

In terms of what? Investment? Wow factor? Aesthetics?

In terms of investment, I suppose if Rose gets in the HOF, higher grade examples could get a bump from PSA Registry competition. Then again, I suspect most who are chasing teh BB HOF RC set already have a Rose RC. Many feel vintage football, and HOF RCs in particular, are undervalued compared to their baseball counterparts. Football continues to grow in popularity and the thinking is football collectors will too?

As far as wow factor, if you were to ask 100 vintage football guys to list their top 10 cards in the hobby, I suspect the vast majority would include the Unitas. How many vintage baseball guys would include Rose?

In terms of appearance, it ain't even close to me, 1957 Topps football wins in a landslide.

I guess I am thinking in terms of which card would hold its value or maybe go up a bit. Assuming that you would invest the same money into each of them. Or if you would trade cards, would they each be about the same in value right now?

  • Rose has better upside, high grade raw or slabbed.

Agree that older football is undervalued and underated.

Rose goes in the HOF. big plus.

I'd give Rose a slight advantage just because the Unitas seems to be easier to find in 8's. If I'm not mistaken, I believe it's a double print. Really though, you can't go wrong with either card.

I only collect baseball. So I must say the Unitas. At lease he is a Hall of Fame player.

Rose, will never be reinstated. He broke the only rule that is unforgivable.

I'd take the Rose, but I'm partial to 63 Topps, especially in 8.

1966 Sutton RC has it beat. Bad design, airbrush, and a horrible pic to boot.

Unitas is more of a sure thing; and, a pretty card.

There is NO reason to think that Rose will ever be
in the HOF. I wish he was - he deserves it - but I
get less - not more - optimistic as time passes.

Rose cheated, Unitas did not. Go with Johnny U.

Wow the board is pretty even so far John U - 10, Rose - 8, 4 - no vote, 1 Sutton??? Let me hear your thoughts.

I'd take the Rose in a heartbeat, but then I'm partial to vintage baseball and the '63 set. The Rose RC is iconic.
