I had the opportunity to meet Cuellar in August of 2009 and I wrote a piece as a tribute to the legendary lefty who passed away from stomach cancer on April 2, 2010. RIP.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

He always seemed to be a good mood , and I believe he knew he was very well received here in Baltimore. He was very well liked.
He could hit a bit , as he could surprize you with the long ball, now and then. He was an okay fielder , but had a better than average pickoff move. I remember him throwing over and over to first , to keep the runner close. He had a high pickoff count as well.
I remember , he was a "Hot" weather pitcher , which is confirmed over at --- retrosheet.org--. He normally got hammered in April , then put on an exhibition the rest of the season. He pitched VERY well , at home , in Baltimore . He had a record of 72-39 with an ERA of 2.86 . He didn't have Koufax #'s at home , but he wasn't Koufax either. He was a pitcher that you could could count on . He knew what he was doing. When he didn't have his good stuff , he would dazzle you with his bad stuff.
As an American , I had a lot of respect for Mike. I remember an interview he gave once , on national TV , where the reporter asked him about race relationships , here in America. The question was asked about how much racism he was experiencing. His reply was a classic--- "I'm not black , I'm a Cuban ". The end.
He was one of the most favorite Orioles , for alot of people. He's not in the HOF for baseball, but is in the HOF of alot of people's hearts.
RIP Mike Cuellar . The world was a better place , when you were here. Thanks for the memories---- Sonny
