There were a lot of posters (in the US forums) I could imagine getting bammed, MadMarty wasn't one of them.

I don't think it's his style to sneak in with an alt. Other interesting members have been banned over the years too, from gmarguli to Madmart now. It's mostly a loss for us, who enjoyed their posts. Host is always right though. image

I didn't mean he would sneak back in-I meant that the threads he posted to (see the relevant US thread) were not anything anyone might not have asked.

I just can't see someone with his record of PCGS holdering and forum participation being banned for any length of time.

I read that Don Willis was being blamed for this. I can't believe he would be so small-minded. If so, well, we're all in trouble.image

From the gist of what little I've read, it seems to have had something to do with the furor over "The Big One"? I did not read the thread in question.

As I suggested here on a topic with that theme, now more than ever is the time to be tactful with our corporate hosts, and not rock the boat too much with inflammatory criticisms. Not that I suggest Marty did that- I have no idea.

But I can smell blood in the water over on the Liteside- more of it than usual- and I have the feeling the axe will be used again.

And I will once again state that legitimate criticism, which is not a childish temper tamtrum, but rather sincere voicing of our huge disappointment for way over hyping an announcement, which no reasonable person could believe to be warranted, should be welcomed by our hosts, and anyone who attempts to walk on egg shells (in order to protect posting rights) has no principles of any consequence. And again I will state that I have not read any overly critical posts on this forum, which would warrant suspension by any reasonable host. But if I have misjudged our host's policy on such things and get banned as a result, well then, I will not believe I have truly lost anything of too great a value.

lordmarcovan, I believe you are suggesting that posters be respectful, and I would be in complete agreement, but your posts have been somewhat ambiguous in that regard, so I am not absolutely certain. If I have judged correctly, then let me apologize in advance for what I am about to say, and that is, if you are suggesting that I treat the hyped announcement made by our hosts as something that wasn't a complete bonehead move, the effect of which was to pretty much tick off many of their loyal customers, then please invest in some gonad seeds and grow them.

Again, if I have judged your character correctly, and if you did not mean to suggest we not strongly criticize our host when they so royally screw up, then you and I are of the same mind, and I apologize for the suggestion I just made.

Oh, you've made some excellent points. I often speak (well, type) very obliquely and ambiguously, and tiptoe around sensitive issues. I have even been known to contradict myself quite often in the process.

I think legitimate criticism has its place- both in what customers say about PCGS and in the very valid criticism you just directed my way.

I just reread the sticky post at the top of the Liteside, and its tenor is not quite as draconian as I remembered it being. Don Willis says bashing other services is forbidden, but does not go so far as to say that criticism of PCGS itself is verboten. There are some lines in Rule #1 about how it's their sandbox and not a democracy and so on that have been on my mind. You should know I'm once bitten twice shy when it comes to stuff like this after having my metal detecting stories banned from all forums except Metal Detecting, for being "off topic"- never mind that the stories were about finding US coins and I was posting them on the US Coin Forum! In light of such intolerance (which was forced on the mods by one single complainant), you should understand how gun-shy I am and yes, quite a bit more timid than I used to be. The atmosphere on the forums is far different from what it was three or four years ago, let alone eight or nine years ago.

I'll take your suggestion about *ahem* gonad seeds under consideration. image

Of course this is mostly off-topic on the Marty issue. I do wonder what happened there.

Oh rats. He didn't come over here often, but was fun....and he pointed out many a mommy/baby medal for me to bid on (I think he was just looking at the mommy parts though....)

    Sigh.

Under the new management this place has become a very less fun place to be. One has to constantly be wary that their opinion might ruffle administrative feathers. The number of thread deletions and member bans is WAY up. One of the reasons I don't hang out here much any more. Woe betide anyone that speaks critically of PCGS and/or disagrees with any of the moderators on any issue.

It's too bad. This used to be a fun and lively place. I guess that's not what management wants. C'est la vie.

EDIT: Apparently ANACONDA got banned at or about the same time. Lot of oldtimers getting the axe.

    Really?

Who has been banned from the world coin forum lately? If I missed something, please let me know.

I enjoyed madmarty like everyone else and I'll miss him but he was primarily a lightsider and that's where he got in trouble-not here.

From time to time we've all bemoaned the lack of civility on the US side and have discussed how nicely we get along here. And we do
get along, and inform each other and support each other.

This forum is what we make of it and I'll tell you, the quality of coins posted here is of a very diverse nature. Fines live next door to UNC's and Gem's-and I like that.
I think the diversity and quality of the coins shown and the expertise of the current membership equals anything I've seen in the past.
Just look at the coins in the Hussulo's COTY thread, awe-inspiring!

We are diminished by your absence for instance-where have you been? Did you ban yourself?image Just kidding my lad, I miss your coins
and your imaging. Do you hang out on another forum these days?

My old and crusty Italian father-in-law still lives by the saying: "What you put into the pot is what you get out of the pot."

So, put something in this pot and enjoy...image Got any newps?

It's been mentioned in at least two threads in the US section, but Walmann has gotten the boot.

MadMarty is one of the good guys, as we all know. He also did a LOT to fatten PCGS's coffers. Over the years PCGS has banned many for constructive criticism, obviously forgetting who the hands are that feed it.
