Lets change it up!! Coins

No pun intended.
Who else on these boards collect both coins and cards?? What do you feel about both hobbies? Here are some of my fav errors and low pops. Just got the 1916 standing liberty this week and its my #1 coin.
Post youre gems even though this is a baseball form. Lets see some hands.image

I feel the coin hobby is going to jump in the next 10 years with the baby boomers coming out more so than cards. Thoughts?

These are in PCGS slabs and graded L to R: MS-66, MS-66, and MS-65.

    A 1951 P D S set of Carver / Washington Commemoratives.

A little history on the coins. The US Mint has only made 5 coins with African-Americans on them. The first was the Booker T. Washington Commem from 1946 through 1951. The second was the Carver Washington for 1951 through 1954. There are also 3 Modern Commems which I don't own. The Jackie Robinson $1, the Black Patriots with Crispus Attucks, the first American killed during the Revolutionary War, and the Little Rock Central High School Desegregation Commem, the 50th anniversary (I do own this one).

ALso I like SGCs case for cards vs PSAs but the PCGS case blows away the NGC case!

I love coins... I used to collect them before I did baseball cards. Just like cards I enjoyed collecting coins as they are a part of the history of this country, just like cards are a history of the evolution of the game of baseball.

Nice coins all around, but that 1856 Flying Eagle is a beauty...imageimage

Dang, I forgot about that one. I have never actually seen a DC Quarter. Saw a picture of one, must be why I forgot it.

Working with a European bank I have produced a few legal tender silver coins.

This was my favorite, it is normal 1 oz. round size. On the coin is pieces of the Brenham meteorite.

It was a great idea Handyman. It would be a dull world if all your interest lie in just one area.
I also collect B. Kliban cat stuff, look it up on eBay. I used to buy his cat calendars back in the 70's and though he died around '82 his work is still popular.

  • I have some 2008 American silver eagles I purchased from apmex.com. I just decided to take some out of the tube to look at them and

some of them are showing a color change on the borders. A rustic color. Anyone have an idea what caused this?

It's called toning and is desirable to many. Sulfer is one way silver tones, in your case something

in the plastic may have caused it. DO NOT dip it of clean it off.

  • Thanks for the replies. Yes, I had them out of the tube for a few days and put them back in, but that was over a year ago until I opened it back up today.

So it feels that some none pocket protection people dont like coins at all and fear they may inter this form.(but if you can read I asked what you thought about the 2 hobies) Just another hobby friends dont be scared. I like my shirt clean but I guess I like my shirt dirty because I collect baseball cards too..?

I'm an avid coin collector as well, and enjoy coin collecting as much as I do cards...I also believe that coins will have a lot more long-term value than cards and memorabilia in general, where fraud is much more widespread. Every now and then you may encounter a coin dealer selling resealed vintage proof sets or a cleaned or altered coin, but it's not nearly as bad as all the crap that has really damaged the unopened hobby, where half the packs in the new GAI flips are questionable at best.

Why would coin collectors wear pocket protectors and card collectors not? Are we not of the same mold. We have an obsession to gather something and put it into some kind of order. I have cards which I have not added to since 1991 but still enjoy them. That is why I come onto the Card Forum. I took a break from coins for a few years and got into cards. Then after the dealers ran me out of cards I went back to coins.

  • Coins come in handy at the car wash or some older vending machines. And also pinball machines--don't want to leave them out

Cards come in handy for bicycle spokes...and shoeboxes, too..

edit: I can only wish that I could find a vending machine that will take late 80s commons, LOL!

The only coins I collect are the 1976 Bicentennial Quarters. They are not worth anything, but I collected them as a kid because I thought they would eventually be valuable. For some reason I have still saved them when I see one.

Im a card collector, but I have recently purchased a few coins in the hopes of taking an interest in it. I really like the Morgans. I have asked for help and made a couple of purchases from the guys in the coin forum. They were extremely helpful and willing to help out a newbie. Good group of guys over there.

Oh come on guys, I think this thread is cool, and there are plenty of things slabbed coins and slabbed cards do have in common, and there is no harm having this tread over here at all. The fact that already many "card regulars" are showing some "coinage" is image

I do not want to say, if you are upset with this thread do not read it! Oppppps, I just said it, I'm sooooooo sorry!

No hard feelings, but I like it (cards & always liked coins too!)...

    No hard feelings

No hard feelings at all. I respect your opinion as a long time active poster with well thought out posts.

In this case I disagree with you though.

Let me start by saying this is not a big deal to me. Obviously I can choose not to read a thread so it's clearly on me to ignore threads I am not interested in.

To me, it's the old slipperly slope theory. Coins today, maybe record album collectors thread tomorrow, then maybe a thread about cars, then... etc... until we are back to an open forum!? Great. I never contributed much on the open forum and if we had an open forum that would be great. However, for now we have a coin board and we have a sports cards board. It just seems that people should post on the right board. Probably just my OCD talking.

As stated above, it's not a big deal.

I hope one of you starts a baseball card thread on the coin board though. Will be curious how long it lasts.

Could be worse, all of the Star Trek/Wars GEEKS could start posting about that garbage. Then I really would have to object more vocally. image

Ok, my next post will be asking for the vcp of a card or something I guess. Sorry allen
  • It's bad enough we have so many of the same old sportcard posts and now we have the even more boring coins posts? Both hobbies are losing the interest of alot a collectors due to scams, prices of gold and silver,do I keep my cash or blow it on a piece of cardboard? Kids aren't collecting coins, baseball cards, stamps etc. and without future generations who have any interest in these items there will probably be a huge crash in the value since there will be no demand.I have lost interest in my card collection after 30 years and have decided to start selling while I can still get something for it.
