Chi Sun Times Show update

Greetings earthlings,

lots of nerds there, kinda like a star wars convention, but cooler.

lowlight: not finding any quality 75 mini's to speak of

highlight: couple tables w/ ULTRA cheap nm/mt++ 86 fleer basketball singles and several tables w/ nm/mt albums of various 50s sets. i don't collect either of these, so it could possibly be a lowlight, but i will call it a highlight for argument's sake.

J

lowlight #2: 70's today in chicago, tomorrow 30s and snow (WTF?)

    indeed.

i did manage to laugh at the psa representatives walking around handing out free smr's like pez dispenser candy.

i saw people getting stuff graded on sight and immediately said a prayer to allmighty grading gods to smile benevolently upon all orders being processed at the time...

Just returned, was a decent show. Lot of foot traffic from 11 - 2. Managed some nice RC's and inserts at 25 cents each. A couple of douchy dealers that wasted my time with bait and switch. Card Saver I's @ 13 a box. And some free auction catalogs, although not as many as usual.

    Got my six free subs in: Ditka RC, Gretzky RC, 56 Mantle, 60 Mantle, 60 Clemente, 65-66 Bruins Team. I'm hoping 6, 7, 4, 4, 7, 7. We'll see.

Nobody has mentioned that Joe was working the PSA booth today. He happened to overhear me talking with a service rep about a card that came back ungraded from our group sub. After taking the card back to his graders, in person, he offered to take another look at it free of charge (including return postage). That's what I call A+ customer service. Plus it sounds like that there's a T206 book coming out in April that will be the freebee for renewing your collector's club membership (which I did).

Wow, $13 is really cheap for CS1's. I paid $15 at the show for a box of 200 and thought I was getting a good deal.

Just realized they were UltraPro, but same submission size. Yeah, they were 15 -17 elsewhere, when I saw $13 I couldn't pass it up.

I saw Joe at the PSA booth, I was sitting next to him filling out my paperwork. He was talking about the booming coin market to a guy subbing what had to be a stack of 300 1954 Topps *cherry* nice cards.

Just got back from the show. This was the first big show I've attended since getting back into the hobby. I went looking for some low-dollar Marvin Harrison inserts for my player collection.

My first observation was there were a lot less card booths than I expected. There were a ton of people selling all sorts of memorabilia: jerseys, bats, pictures, mini helmets, things to singed, etc. But not a whole lot of people with insert bins or low-dollar stuff. After my first walk through, I started to wonder if I had wasted my time by coming but persistence pays off. I found a couple really nice 25/50 cent bins where I located some really great stuff for my Marvin collection. Got lots of stuff to sort through as I watch the games this evening. I may post scans later of some of my best finds if anyone wants to see some modern football junk.

    Yes please!

Thanks everyone for the reports on the show. It almost makes me feel like I was there.

UGG...I went through some .25 boxes from a dealer and he had tons of Harrison RC's, inserts, etc. I got a bunch of Mannings and Sanders, but no Harrisons. Sorry.

    I picked up the following

    1957 Hank Aaron PSA 8
    1954 Ernie Banks PSA 5
    1957 Bill Mazeroski PSA 8
    1965 Roberto Clemente PSA 8

    8 diff NM 1955 Commons
8 diff 1961 Topps Pirates Autographed.

Good show for me. I had my 1957 Kahns Mazeroski graded and it came back a 3.
