Ryan Howard for Albert Pujols

The Phillies organization has internally discussed proposing a swap of Ryan Howard for Albert Pujols, sources tell Buster Olney of ESPN. Philadelphia GM Ruben Amaro shot the notion down, saying, "That's a lie. I don't know who you're talking to, but that's a lie." Olney stresses that it is not fully clear whether the Phillies have actually approached the Cardinals with the idea.

Both sluggers are 30 years-of-age and both are eligible for free agency following the 2011 season. Pujols is owed $16MM in each of the next two seasons. Howard, meanwhile, is set to make $19MM in 2010 and $20MM the following year. While Pujols comes at a slightly cheaper rate in the next couple of years he (in all likelihood) would cost more to retain than Howard.

Olney points out that Howard is a St. Louis native, meaning that the Cards may be able to sell their fans on such a deal. However, the Cardinals faithful have more or less adopted their three-time NL MVP, who is entering his 10th big league season with the club.

While owner Bill DeWitt wants to keep Pujols in red and white for life, an A-Rodesque $275MM deal might not be financially prudent for the organization. One has to wonder if the Cardinals will have to consider trading their megastar. If so, could a deal centered around Ryan Howard make sense?

Never happen. Of course the Phillies would discuss it internally - but would the Cards actually accept? I don't see it. Next to maybe Jeter and Mauer, no player is more important to the franchise (and not necessarily the team or their success) than Pujols I would imagine. I am no Pujols butt-kisser, but the man is in a class of his own and is on his way to be the best rh hitter ever.

Why not trade Pujols for Milt Pappas while you're at it? You never, ever trade a guy like Pujols. Period.

Not gonna happen. Any team can talk "internally" about trading for anybody. ESPN just wanted a big news story to talk about. Not gonna happen.

  • LOL, I'm sure the Yankees are internally discussing a possible trade for Pujols or Howard too. Jeter to the Giants, Pujols to the Phillies, Ichiro to the Brewers. If Pujols stats were suffering that last couple years, I could see it happening. If Bryce Harper were a first baseman and in the Cards organization, I could see it happening. That fact that Howard is from St. Louis being a key reason the Cards are interested, gimme a break. I'm in KC right now and cant wait to go see a Cards game because of Pujols. I wouldn't bother if he wasn't there.

  • i read this on espn also and it is the biggest load of crap these two eyes have seen insofar this year. what a biased account written by an absolute nobody. who cares what he thinks. i guess this kind of propaganda is the only thing espn has to write about these days. i've met albert numerous times during spring training and i can certainly tell you that he's NOT about the money. a $150 million vs. $300 million makes no difference to him because he want's his wife and kids to be happy and continue to provide support for his autism charity which is based in st. louis. he's not some pre-madonna like half those guys on the yankees. albert pujols will retire in st. louis and him leaving is equivalent to marino not retiring a dolphin or kobe not retiring a laker; it will NEVER happen.

It was once proposed to trade Ted Williams for Joe DiMaggio...

Then everyone woke up and realized how stupid that "idea" was!

This "idea" comes in a very close 2nd as stupidest trade proposal ever!

The Yankees don't need to discuss trading for Pujols. They will just sign him as a free agent in 2011! Pujols/Tex will split time at 1B and DH.
