Roger Maris's 61st - NY Mirror Oct 2, 1961

Hello and good evening,

I am mainly a coin collector, but discovered some sports items while cleaning out my parent's home.

I have an original copy of the Oct 2, 1961 NY Mirror when Maris hit his 61st HR. Its not in the pristine-ist of condition, but it is 50 years old you know

Is there any way I can research this particular paper? Does anyone know what this newpaper may be worth to a collector? Any advice or info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Len

there would be demand for such an item, but probably not as much as one might think as a lot of people saved historical news papers.....

did you check completed eBay searches?

The fact that it was a NY paper will enhance the value somewhat....If I had to guess, I'd say $50 give or take

Thank you Ironmanfan...I did do some Ebay searching around. It seems the big historical events (JFK Assassination, End of WWII, etc) can demand $75 and up. Some papers were in the $150+ range (Lincoln assassination etc) as well. My guess would have been in the price range you mentioned, although mine probably isnt worth that much, since its in pretty ratty condition.

Believe it or not, the person who caught the 61st ball is a high school friend of mine's father. Small world, huh? I'm going to just give it to him as a gift.

There's a sale of a 'local' newspaper - with a BIN of 60 bucks or BO.

    Sale.

I'm in agreement that having a major NYC newspaper would bring in a bit more money.

I have to apologize for not knowing anything about stuff like this - tho I do have a few more recent copies of great accomplisments.

If in Ex condition or so? I would also guess that it would be worth is the 50 to 75$ range - but I could be totally off and it could be worth more - I'm guessing there's plenty of copies out there?

I would say after the record was busted, this lost a little luster but with all the neg press? Who knows - may be more popular than before?

Yes, that's the exact reprinted edition!!! The guy on the right, Sal Durante, is my friend's Dad.

Im guessing that if this person is selling reprints for $15-$20 w/ shipping an original has to be worth at a minimum double or triple that amt.

    Thanks again for the info.
