A huge set of 1986 fleer basketball auto rc sold

This seller has let go a large # of 1986 auto rc with many of the big names like MJ, Malone, Ewing, Mullins, etc.
I am surprised even some of the non-star auto rc from that set went for much more than I expected, namely Sam Bowie and Manute Bol

I wonder how high the high bidder would have went. I would have gone up to at least $400.00, and maybe more if I caught auction fever, LOL. I think that's a low price for a decent looking signed Ewing. There was an ugly bad contrast one (even worse then the contrast on this one) that went for around that same amount last year.

Ewing is a darn near impossible autograph. I personally don't know ANYONE, and I used to trade and deal with a lot of people, who has ever gotten or even SEEN Ewing sign an autograph. Plus the guy was a very intimidating presence, even in a suit. I used to laugh when some of the noobs tried to get him to sign. Given the experience that I had and the experiences of my associates, I would still be skeptical that one is good, but hey, it's in a PSA slab so it's at least marketable.

FWIW I don't know if he ever has done an private or public signing. I know Rich Altman was finally able to convince Bill Russell to do it for an exhorbitant amount of money (original signing I think started at $495 per item) so maybe Patrick sold out too.

When they were active players I'd say these guys were/are the most difficult autographs to obtain (at least KNOWN good ones)

    IMPOSSIBLE
    BKB - Bill Russell
    BKB - Patrick Ewing

    NEAR IMPOSSIBLE (all baseball)
Mike Marshall (relief pitcher, lectured you as he turned you down but was nice about it)
    Ron Reed (a complete dirk)
John Denny (he'd go psycho if you even asked)
    Dickie Noles (aptly named)
Kirk Gibson (actually spit towards me and I was never one of those pushy types)

I think all but Marshall regularly sign for cash now. Marshall reportedly did it once and was so disgusted he vowed never again.

Totally agreed. And I don't think Ewing will ever do private signing, because unlike the other guys you mentioned Ewing is filthy rich. According to this Basketball References, the man made nearly $125 millions (that's just his contract salary alone, not counting his endorsement income) in his life so I am not sure if he thinks its worth his time to do private signing for a few grands.

Garnett is one and also Kobe and Tim Duncan. To be honest all the modern NBA players have zero incentive to do private signing. They make way way way too much $$$ to care a few cents to do private signings.

Who said anything about private signings? Duncan is a good signer, Kobe is hot and cold (mostly cold). Garnett is impossible, however.
People should have to work for their autographs.

It's a shame and a disgrace that athletes are not a little more willing to cater to their fans. Without the fans they would be nothing. I know they are under a lot of duress by sometimes unyielding fans. But still.

  • Bill Russell did his first show at BC High School in Massachusettes around 1992.
People were paying 400.00 for his autograph, while at the same time paying 5 or 10 bucks
for Patrick Roy, Ray Bourque, Jean Beliveau, and Maurice Richard.

I was at that BC High show and the line was crazy for him. Those BC High shows used to bring in some really great auto's and they wer not crazy in prices. I think it used be twice a year and the show was the best buying.

Kirk Gibson is hit or miss.... he might be tougher now, but i got him with no prob back in Lakeland in 1985 after the Tigers won it all. I remember everyone cheered when he came out of the clubhouse after practice. he just smiled, laughed and signed everyone's stuff!! one of the best moments of my life!! of course this was before the famous '88 LA homerun and well before Ebay........

i think that would be a great challenge tho, to get the entire 1986F set signed!! has anyone done it? can't think of a better set!! Rare and small!!
  • The Malone is a very nice autograph. I am a little shocked some of the lesser stars drew that much interest.

anyone have a list of deceased players from the 86 Fleer set?
  • initialDinitialD Posts: 1,624 ✭✭✭
I am working on this set and have gotten many TTM

My measly snipe of $300+ got smoked on Ewing and I knew this guy is impossible image

His sig is horrible!! I think this one looked pretty good

Many other examples weren't the greatest though but brought decent dough

I think Dennis Johnson and Wayman Tisdale are the only deceased

That's very cool. I had begun looking into doing just that a few months ago, but never pulled the trigger.

I was at a Mavs/Thunder game last year, and at one point I was within 10 feet of both Gerald Wilkins and Derek Harper. That got me thinking I could probably get at least 25% of the set signed in person if I went to enough games. Many of the guys in the set are either NBA broadcasters or coaches.

I had just about stopped completely by the time those two came into the league, however A good buddy of mine concurs with what Ahmanfan said. Garnett never signs. He got Kobe twice early on, then he would sometimes be nice, sometimes not but when he signs it's just Kobe or K. According to him Duncan was not a problem.

I'm probably around 20%+ I started this year. Most of these guys don't do signings but alot are still affiliated with the NBA

in some way. There still is a number of players though that just won't sign even IP

Don't know how far I will get, I just have a love for 86 Fleer so it's fun to branch it out

Jordan obviously is the hugest, and the only way I've found to get him to sign a card is to enroll my kid

in his Flight School Camp in CA. Entitles you to one free autograph. Other than that he won't sign cards

Too bad I live on the East Coast and I don't have kids image

Derek Smith is also a deceased player. He is the father of Nolan Smith that plays at Duke. I think he died at around age 35.
