Ticket Stub for Darlington

In 1985 Winston offered a million dollars to any Nascar driver that could win 3 of the Big Four races. The Big Four were: The Daytona 500, Winston 500 at Talladega, The World 600 at Charlotte, and The Southern 500 at Darlington. Bill Elliott, driving the Coors # 9 Ford had won two of the first three and needed to win Darlington to capture the million dollars. A friend offered me 4 tickets in the upper grand stand box seats which came with a parking permit. I could not refuse. There was no doubt in my mind that Elliott was going to win that day. Elliott did win the race and money and it was the last time it was accomplished until sometime in the 90's by Jeff Gordon. The parking permit let us park at the gate, next to the stairs leading to our seats.

Thank you for the kind words. As you see from the dates I went to Nascar races way back when. I was younger then and the wear and tear on me wasn't as great. From 1967 to 1972 we probably averaged 15 or 16 races a year. But Nascar was a different world back than. After the races you could visit the pits after the factory drivers were given time to leave. But most stayed and talked to fans. Richard Petty was always available to his fans. A true gentleman. Have sat on car carriers with various drivers and had a beer with them which I offered. It was a good time.
