Been reading this board for a long time
I'm 38, but I look at you all as teachers and experts. I've been coming to this board for a long time, but I finally signed up. I think this is my second post, and got a membership for psa. I started collecting in 1984. I don't have the great older cards like a lot of you have, but that's okay, cause I admire and appreciate what you all have. I'm impressed. I don't know much people who collect cards, so I'm glad there's a place like this with people who understand. I wanted to say thanks for keeping collecting interesting and passing on your knowledge.
Thanks for your help everyone.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

Same basic story as OP here, have read for months, registered only recently. I don't actually collect anymore (I'm down to two PSA-graded cards in total... ), but still follow the hobby. May someday jump back in and scoop up 1980s HOFers selling for dirt-cheap.
My main concern with the BBC hobby concerns fraud - especially that vintage cards are too easily counterfeit. (And therefore how they can hold value thereby...)
And the forged autographs. I never buy autographs, graded or not.
And the too-easily resealed wax packs. Never buy either.
And the possibility of fake cards making into graded holders.
That the cards in the holders are switched and resealed.
And most of all... THAT I CAN'T EVEN TOUCH A CARD NOW WITHOUT REDUCING IT TO PSA 8 (at best.)
Statistics-wise, any website has better info, e.g.:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/
Photos-wise, ESPN.com.
So what's left for the baseball card?
I'd pay big bucks for vintage Mantles - were I certain of authenticity.
And PSA grading has ruined my fondness for wax-stained and badly off-centered cards - especially the miscut with razor-sharp corners. Now I'm just another superficial PSA size-queen.

Think you are being too negative. Counterfeit vintage cards aren't seen that often. You do have to know what to look for, it basically comes with experience and boards like these can help. Have fun with the hobby, if you don't want graded cards, buy raw.

I admire your concern for fraud, but the only thing I completely agree with you on that can't be resolved through knowledge, is your comment on autographs. In my opinion, I believe in too many cases, it is basically impossible to ascertain if an autograph is genuine or not.
There are skilled forgers out there who can sign things better than the players could, and this is nothing new.
Ya think?
I have personally had a ton of dealings in eBay, this board and through people I've met only via cyberspace. With one or two exceptions, I've had nothing but a wonderful experience. If anything went south it was because I didn't do my due diligence and may have gotten bitten a time or two. And those very, very few exceptions were really no big deal.
Maybe you need to get out of the collecting arena, try RC model airplanes or photography, in those arenas only you are in control and the disaster is totally on YOU.
To the post about counterfeits, either buy from only those you trust (who sometimes unknowingly can sell bad items) or educate yourself. It can be depressing with all the scams and such but if you know what to look for, you can eliminate most risk.

Wow! A simple question, why bother? With such a jaded outlook and suspicious concerns, I seriously doubt there would be any way you could find enjoyment in the hobby. Must really suck to be so paranoid.

As far as your age ... I was in college BEFORE you started Kindergarten! ahaha (52 next month).
Enjoy this site. The more you participate the more you will learn. I have gained a LOT of knowledge from fellow board members.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
No negative comments so far on this thread!! +1 for the board
Welcome aboard
"Molon Labe"
welcome. & nice intro!
Bunker asked what I collect. I haven't collected since the 80's. I remember the fun times and excitement of opening packs and trying to get the Strawberry, Gooden, Kirby Puckett, Mattingly, Will Clark, Eric Davis, Hershiser, Saberhagen, Canseco and Pete Incaviglia rookies.
Lots of people suggest a 10X lighted loupe to look at your cards before sending them in. I use a scanner with high resolution because I have bad eyes. Either way, look at your cards under magnification before sending them. It can save you from the occasional PSA 5 when you were expecting an 8 or 9.
Everybody is disappointed when you get your first results. Don't be discouraged, it happens and we hopefully get better at grading with more experience.
If you have good pics or scans of the cards you're thinking about subbing for your CC submission, maybe post the scans and get some opinions. Lots of good graders here willing to help.
