Cracked open and resubmitted only to get a lower grade.

Has this ever happened to you? I had some free submitions so I had 10 PSA 8's of the same cards from 1974 so I cracked open the best one and sent in. I thought it might get a .5 bump only to find out I get a PSA 7 yes a down grade of 1 point ( what the heck is up with that) anyone?

It happens and you have to resubmit again to get a better grade.

if it is a high dollar card i think it is best to go the 'review' route, rather than crack and resub. image

Yep, review is the way to go.

On just about any card IMO.

One other point, grading is an art not a science so that is why one day a card could be an 8 the next day a 7.

I have cards in 7 and 8 holders that on a bad day could easily be a 6 and 7 respectively.

It's just part of the grading game.

This is trite but the "good" of TPGs far outweigh the bad IMO.

The frustrating part is after careful scrutiny and selecting only the best they come back lower. Maybe it's me, I only have about 1600 PSA cards and need more examples of each grade to get a better understanding. I do better to purchase cards already graded. That is what I will do.

Yes, this has happened to me. I've then subbed the card again to have it get the higher grade I was after.

I used to be down on PSA for this, always wondering, "Why can't they just get it right the first time?" Now I've come to realize that, with the inherit subjectivity of grading, expecting a particular result is just not realistic. When assessing raw cards (either for sale or subbing), I often change my own opinion several times...going up and down with the grade like a yo-yo.

Unfortunately, this makes you second guess buying a card that is graded high.

It's nice when they come back with EOT, then you know it has a shot at a 10.

Kind of close but I just sent in 2 1953 Topps Baseball cards next to each other. And the one that I thought might grade a 3-3.5 because it had a corner crease about 1 inch long graded a 5! And the other one which looked 50-50 with no wear thought it was a 7-8 graded the same as the one with the crease a 5. Head scratcher. Oh and in the same sub I sent in a 1960 Fleer Wagner which looked like a lock 8 which I had graded 2 times already was mim size this time. But I did get an 8.5 from a cracked out PSA 7. 7 to an 8.5!

Can almost guarantee that this has the typical back crease that hides in the rippled stock. Take a close look at it especially in the reverse middle near the top.

Looks like the tilt on the Aaron brought the 7.

The chipping along the left side and bottom edges are more detrimental than the slight tilt which is within the parameters for a straight 8.

Theres PSA 9s with tilts worse looking than on his card. Re-sub it and send them the cracked holder with the flip so they have an idea image
  • howdy, can you tell me how you opened your psa cards without damaging them? i have some that i'd rather have UN graded. thanks a lot, mark at reds94015@yahoo.com
