OT: Lazy Mailmen

My mailman is pretty lazy. Anytime a package is insured or requires delivery confirmation he never comes to the door first before leaving a pickup slip. He just tosses it in my mailbox and moves on. I've complained to the post office 3 times about this already, and it seems like every time I do it will resolve the problem for a few months before it starts back up with the same trend again. Regardless my group sub cards that Bill mailed back need to be picked up today, so a wonderfully long line is in my future for this afternoon...

Anyone else have this problem with their mailmen?

  • I used to have a similar problem with my mailman. Not to mention a few missing packages. After enough complaints, he was eventually fired. My current maillady is friggin awesome. If I have a few larger packages, she will deliver them before she starts her route. She NEVER leaves them sitting on the porch. If I'm not home when she stops by, she will stop by again before she heads back to the PO. She ROCKS!!
  • my suggestion is to get a PO box.

Nope, besides being one of my catchers at one time and having me sell 15k worth of early 50's cards for him my mailman is the best.

He will make sure 'we' get our subs back without delay.

    Sorry your guy blows.

I've thought about this in the past but then one day I had an epifany...

Contact the Postmaster and each time this takes place, submit in writing your complaint. This should solve the problem but a paper trail will help you if something ends up missing!

Like Bill .. I am very lucky. My mailman is a GREAT guy and at times goes out of his way for me.

    Bill nailed it.

several Christmasesses ago, on Christmas Eve actually, my wife decided to give our regular carrier a nice gift and he told her "You don't need to do this, in fact we're really not supposed to take gifts", but she persisted and he accepted....it is a pleasure to know that when a PSA order or eBay purchase is on the way, he makes certain it gets handed directly to me or the Mrs.....my only irritation has derived from the laziness of the substitute carriers, so i told our regular guy he can't go on any more vacations unless he checks with me first. image

I have a PO box but one of the new guys started bending & folding my bubble mailers to fit them into the box
    I complained and they stopped

I cringe when I see my mailwoman's cart sitting on the sidewalk while she's inside a building hallway sorting mail. There's just a ton of packages bursting at the seams from that cart, and I can imagine a box from Newport Beach with about 200 slabs "falling off" that thing.

All of my items are mailed to my work and the Mailman is top notch.
  • My regular mailman is very dependable (Well, okay, there was that time he took a hard cardboard mailer containing a certified autographed 8x10 of a HOFer and creased it in half so he could fit it in my mailbox image ). But as a general rule, he takes good care of me.

On his day off though, it gets a little dicey. About three months ago, I was eagerly waiting for a special card that I knew would be coming that day. I kept glancing out the window and finally I see the postal truck pull up. The substitute driver reaches over and puts my mail in my mailbox. I throw on my coat and dash out to the mailbox to retrieve my treasure. What do I find? An attempted delivery slip. What the?!

I was so mad, I jumped in my car and caught up with her two blocks away. I showed her the attempted delivery slip she had just left in my mailbox. "Oh", she says. "I thought you weren't home."image How would she know since she never got out of the truck to come to my door? Does she have some sort of psychic powers? She sheepishly handed me my mailer (I think she expected me to rant). Instead, I kept my cool, took my package without a thank you and headed home.

Thanks for letting me vent, K.

    +1

Postal employees drive me nuts. Between the fools I used to deal with at the post office, to the people my mother in law works with....morons. My mailman almost drove into my wife last week, then he tried to get an attitude with her. That didn't go over too well with me.

I don't have this problem with USPS, but I live in a nice crowded city where my doorbell is next to my mailbox which is next to my front door.

My problem is with UPS. They sometimes just toss the package from the sidewalk onto the front steps...Donato

  • I have the same problem with my mailman. I cant believe he hasnt been fired. Whenever i recieve a package that required $1000 or more of insurance with signature confirmation, the mailman just leaves the package at my door without getting my signature. I think he signs it in my name himself. Had the same problem with fedex one time.

Look at that! I had to work late again! So now I have to wait until possibly tomorrow to get my package since the post office closes in 17 mins and I am currently 45 away!

The next time that happens, send me a PM with the signature confirmation number. I'll get into the postal intranet at work, and print you a hard copy of the required signature. If he signs your name that would be a reason for termination. Any other bad things in his OPF and you might get a new carrier.

Lots of lazy carriers do that, in their minds it's a shortcut and "no harm no foul". The harm comes when the package disappears and you didn't sign for it.

City carriers are being rushed more and more by the supervisors to take more mail and get back faster. They're all trying to stay under budget so they can get their bonuses (performance based pay since they're not allowed bonuses). USPS wants them to cut corners to get done faster.

Rural carriers are a different story. We get paid by the day, not by the hour. If I get done with my route at 4pm I go home at 4pm. If I get done at noon I go home at noon. Same pay. Some rural carriers think it's better to get done faster so they can go home earlier. I think it's nice to do my job, throw my customers some service, and not work overtime free.

Christmas gifts are nice. I usually get about $1000 a year from my 600 or so families. I think that's pretty good since they advertise that we're not supposed to get cash and the max value of a gift should be $20. It's a nice gift for the local food bank, they need it more than I do. Everybody in my office donates our gifts to the food bank. We have a nice office and like our jobs.

Things that make your carrier happy are -

not blocking your mailbox with your car
picking up your mail every day
leaving the red flag up when you have outgoing mail
    cleaning up after your pet
waving or saying hi now and then
using the right address all the time
keeping the approach to your mailbox clear from snow

Those things are better than Christmas gifts. We get to know which stops are a PITA and sometimes act accordingly.

I hate apologizing for bad lazy carriers. You couldn't possibly imagine how bad some of them are and I feel sorry for people who live on the routes they deliver.

I can't say that I've ever had problems with my mail carriers. At our old house, we had the best one ever - he knew our cars and would not leave packages if they weren't around. He would always return a couple times during the day to drop off packages if that's what it took. And he smiled ALL THE TIME. Dude loved his job.

At our last house, we had good ones as well. We got quite a bit of snow the last couple years and I always made sure to sure a path from our house to the neighbors, though our lawns (since that's how our houses were connected) so the guy didn't have to trudge through 2 feet of snow.

Now, UPS..that's a different story. TWICE had them leave $1000+ packages in front of our apartment door without even knocking. Both packages required signatures, none was asked for. We were home both times. Did I mention that our apartment was right next to the manager's? And that there was no security to get into our building? Fortunately, we got the packages both times but...

I moved within a couple of miles from my Post Office a few years ago and one thing I noticed almost right away was that we constantly had different mail carriers.

I inquired with one of them and found out that the route I am on is used for training purposes. It is not uncommon to have a mail jeep followed closely by a white mini van.

Because of that I have been pretty lucky. Most of the carriers are super friendly either because they are new and really enjoy their job or because they know they are being watched. Some are slower than others, but for the most part I get pretty good service.

The biggest problem we have is mail getting delivered to the wrong house (I get my neighbors and he gets mine) So far this hasn't created any major problems, fortunately my neighbor and I are pretty good friends. If he moves I will be a little more concerned.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

I once had a midgraded E98 Cobb tossed under my gate.

Bad news was the gate was used by me and my neighbor who had a big dog he let out in the front yard we shared. I got the package the next day with slobber and bit marks all over the package. Luckily it was in a small box full of foam peanuts, and card was undamaged. Yes, It was insured and needed to be signed for.
After I talked to him, mailman never did that again image
