swiss shooting medals---quick help

what is the difference between swiss shooting medals and swiss shooting "thalers" (as a novice i refer to those bearing 5franc denominations as thalers, and those without the denominations as medals)????...are they all part of the same set? and were both medals and thalers both circulated at these shooting fests??? thanks for any help on the topic...mak

The old Krause has the shooting talers listed, but I understand the new edition dropped them. The only link online I can offer is the NGC registry. Zohar on this forum has one heck of a set going:

Regarding the question of the difference between medals and 5 franc "talers", I assume it is that the 5 franc pieces were struck for circulation. I'm curious to hear what others have to offer on the pieces.

Zohar is to be commended. That's a lot of time and effort well rewarded.

Very nice eye candy-I didn't realize they are doing things like that over there.

It's great to see interest in these. I have dedicated some of my focus to these given the beautiful designs.

Generally speaking the Shooting "Talers" were circulated as 5 Franc commemorative coins (with low mintages), with the exception of the 1842 which carries a 4 Franken denomination. Given the circulation, nice grades are harder to find. The medals were minted and given at the shooting contests themselves typically with Bronze, Silver and some Gold pieces at various mintages. Mintages range from hundreds to thousands, thus making these hard to come by. Quite a few have been melted.

You can see my "Taler" set in my signature line. I have a few of my medals listed on this thread Shooting Medals

The "shooters" are generally of two types; the Federal issues, i.e. Basel 1879, Zurich 1872, etal. The others are the National festivals which were Kantonal or regional affairs. Those are generally identified by Martin #s, or more recently, Richter #s. Here's Keplinger's link for those interested in obtaining a copy.

Jurg Richter for only $185 ppd.

Yeah, a buck-eighty-five, but one or two "scores" will make the book seem cheap. image

Remember, knowledge is power............plus, they are beautiful pieces, especially the 19th c. material.
