Why an eBayer did not give me 5 stars
384292611.jpg)
Until a couple of months ago on eBay I had a 5 out of 5 on all the "stars". In addition, my feedback has been 100% since I started ~7 years ago.
I bring 5 or 6 packages to my PO. I go to the window to have them weighed and I pay for postage. (The people at my PO ARE THE BEST ... however, a mistake was made this time.) A week later I get one of the packages returned to me ... FOR NO POSTAGE! The clerk somehow screwed up and there was no postage on one of my packages.
I email the buyer ASAP (I also email every buyer as soon as I drop off the package at the PO) telling him what happened. I even scanned a picture of the package and sent it to him. He gets back to me and says don't worry and thanks for the heads up.
The package finally gets delivered, the guy gives me positive feedback, but he KILLS me in the shipping rating. I asked him why, since I told him what happened. His response was:
THAT WILL HAVE NO EFFECT ON YOUR FEES..THEY ONLY COUNT 1 OR 2 STARS AS AFFECTING YOUR RATING,SORRY,I ACTUALLY FORGOT IT WAS THAT CARD THAT HAD POSTAGE PROBLEM, I WAITED OVER 20 DAYS FOR ANOTHER PURCHASE.
The same week another buyer knocks me down for shipping charges. I am not sure who it was, but the MOST I charged anybody was $2.50 ... that was for one graded card, shipped in a bubble mailer with DC. I believe my cost, WITHOUT the price of the bubble mailer, is around $2.40.
UNREAL!

I'm impressed you had a 5.0. I ship either same day or next day and I still can't get my shipping time above 4.9.
Too many of those 1 or 2's though and ebay takes away the Top Rated Seller badge which I guess to some buyers is meaningful.
Yea, it does tick ya off when ya do everything right and mistakes are made beyond your control, but frankly you did everything quite professionally and in the long run it will work out fine, as I think you probably know.
I'm not sure, but if the first example the guy made a mistake and says so, can't you report that to eBay so that it can be fixed? I know I've read on different threads about people making errors when giving feedback and I thought (perhaps incorrectly) that if both parties agree then eBay can fix the error?

EBay is really promoting the idea that shipping should be included in the cost so I think some people don't give 5 stars on shipping if you charge at all.

DSR's are nothing more than an ebay game. That along with the feedback nonsense, this new "great" fee system that helps everyone EXCEPT sellers and other various ebay jokes. Its just a game to divert your attention that they are a bunch of mindless tools that hopefully will be out of business soon. Treat it as such.

That's not possible, according to ebay. They say "detailed seller ratings are anonymous." Heh.
<< <i>Don't sweat it. My DSR for S&H charges when I had my store was always at 4.8. I always shipped next day and always had FREE shipping. Never again will I have any items with free shipping. >>
Same here - especially as a non power seller (so no benefits), I am done with that crap...especially with all the cheap crads ($50 or less) that I sell.
Until sellers stand up and tell the RICO-gang that the game is over,
nothing will change.
EBAY/PP are totally out of control and are destroying THOUSANDS of
sellers every month.
I really don't care what some ignorant buffoon-peasant thinks my DSR
scores and FB should be.

It's not just eBay. The industry standard is that shipping is free for purchases over a certain amount ($25 on Amazon, for example). Many customers are used to free shipping from many other retailers (and never having to bother about paying extra shipping/handling for insurance). It may not seem fair, but that is the way internet retailers have been operating for quite a while, and customers have grown accustomed to NOT paying for shipping. This feedback comes through loud and clear every time we conduct customer research on behalf of our internet retailing company.
"Free" shipping works great for BINs on EBAY.
Just decide what you want for an item, ADD the S+H costs,
and that is your retail price.
I haven't charged for shipping in more than a year. I'm thinking if I slip a dollar in the package, I can get it close to 5.
Only an idiot would have a message board signature.

STORM ... I agree ... and eBay promotes it as well. WHY? So they can get a friggin percentage from your damn out of pocket shipping costs!!!

I say charge $3 for shipping and never look back. You profit an extra .40? Great. If someone knocks your DSR's down, who cares? When was the last time you did NOT buy something because of low DSR's? Probably never. Bad feedback? Totally different. The biggest issue is if you will receive your item, not if they're a slow shipper and you get it a couple of days later than you prefer.
Don't look at your DSR's and don't worry about them.

The buyer pays ALL expenses/costs incurred by any experienced seller.
I never worry about how much money EBAY/PP makes. The money they
make on my sales is ALL coming from the pockets of the buyers.
<< <i>Ebay should give sellers a discount or 1% toward Ebay bucks if the seller has free shipping. They're probably making .10 - .20 per every bubble envelope that a seller offers free shipping on.

I support this. I'm quite frankly becoming leery of free shippers, as the frequency of PWEs showing up in my mailbox has gone up a lot. Charge me reasonable shipping, with reasonable combined shipping charges, and lets all let Ebay play their silly-ass DSR games.

How accurate was the item description?
3 Star: Neither inaccurate nor accurate
4 Star: Accurate
5 Star: Very accurate
How satisfied were you with the seller's communication?
3 Star: Neither unsatisfied nor satisfied
4 Star: Satisfied
5 Star: Very satisfied
How quickly did the seller ship the item?

4 Star: Quickly
5 Star: Very quickly
How reasonable were the shipping and handling charges?
3 Star: Neither unreasonable nor reasonable
4 Star: Reasonable
5 Star: Very reasonable
A buyer with a positive experience could easily leave all 3's or a combination of 3' and 4's to reflect his experience without any malice whatsoever. How is the buyer 'sposed to know that even leaving all 4's (Satisfied, Quickly and Reasonable) is "bad" for the seller due to eBay's policy?
<< <i>DSR's are nothing more than an ebay game. >>
That's not necessarily true.
I received an email from eBay a while back saying that since I have received 2 different ratings of 2 or lower for COMMUNICATION, that my seller account could be suspended.
Really? My rating is 4.9 for communication. While I don't sell as much as I used to, I'm curious how I could have gotten a 2 or less for communication from anyone.
Are they the people who expect an email every time I have a thought about their auction?
Or are they the ones that are annoyed that eBay sends them an automatic message 2 days after they won an auction because they haven't paid yet?
Either way, DSR's are a little more than an eBay game.
