Registry Question...

I just joined the registry for my favorite player and ran into a strange problem. Apparently there are two identical id #'s /grades/cards of this particular rookie card. PSA requested that I send a scan of the front and back of the card which I did. They will amend the id # after reviewing the card first hand. Not sure how two identical id #'s with two identical grades on the same card could occur. Seems to me that the person who may have owned the card sometime in the past is refusing to take it off his registry. Any thoughts?

If I'm understanding you right, ID # is the cert #....if so, someone just didn't remove it from their inventory. PSA asks for the scans to prove ownership, and they'll email you back telling you that it can be added to your inventory.
  • Yes, apparently the other collector also sent scans of the card with same cert/id#. Seems unlikely to me for two people to own the same card with same cert/id#, but I just started with the registry so I don't know if this has happened before. I am in possession of the card- and Psa has requested the card from me for perusal/correction so I guess have to send it back to CA. Pete
  • I'm sure PSA will compensate you since it was their mistake but you'll probably have to ask for it. I've never heard of this happening but I don't think you need to worry...
  • Is this something you bought on Ebay and the card had scans on front and back? Wonder if the 'other' owner is pulling images to build their registry

  • Yes, the card was bought on ebay and scans of both the back and front of the card were available.

  • This has happened to me a few times. I buy a card and then try to enter it onto the registry -- only to be told someone else already has the card registered. I email the other side to ask them to remove the card and hear nothing back. I then email the PSA registry and they ask that I scan front and back, with some kind of date evidence (usually the front page of the newspaper). They ask the other person to do the same.

Every single time it's happened (got to be at least half a dozen times) the other side doesn't respond and PSA removes the card from the other person's registry. I can then add mine.

    BUT...

About 6 months ago I got an email from someone asking me to remove my 1960 Yaz RC in PSA 9 from the registry as they had the same ceryification number. What the??? I thought. I checked to see if the card had gone missing but sure enough it was there. I contacted PSA and they asked me to scan the front/back of the card with a recent newspaper to evidence the date. I did and they came back and told me the other party had also come through with the correct scan. Now I asked myself -- what are the odds of a duplicate certification number happening? Crappy quality control for sure but possible I guess. If they can grade a 7 as an 8.5 then who knows right? Then I asked myself what are the odds of a duplicate certification number on EXACTLY the same card. OK, now we're talking lotto odds but still possible I guess. Here's the whammy -- what are the odds that you get a duplicate certification number, on exactly the same card, that just happens to be a PSA 9. There are only 37 of them! How is that possible I asked PSA? It's happened before they said. I just about crapped myself. (Aussie slang for scared the holy heavens out of me -- imagine the ramifications the poor quality control and systems can have on low pop high value cards if it happens regularly...)

They asked me to send the card in and they'd verify it -- then reslab it or the other one. Now, I live in Australia so the thought of just sending it over for a check and reslab didn't sit well with me so I held it back. I also wanted to see if the other collector really did have the card. My thinking was that they'd contact me once the other card arrived -- but the other card never did. My Yaz is still on the registry. I'll be going to the National and I'll bring it then, in person, to ensure there's no issue with it but it again looks like someone was trying to increase their registry score.

The thought of double up certs really makes me wonder about the quality control in the grading process.

Having said that, I've found the registry team at PSA to be fantastic and really helpful. Not often you get great customer service these days.
Collecting HOF RC's in hockey, baseball, football and basketball. A fool's errand some have said.

Sounds like someone may be getting really good at faking PSA slabs and flips.
