Drysdales - updated - added 2 more

Thought I'd share my progress on collecting the nicest Drysdales I can afford. He was an awesome pitcher but also a great hitter. He hit 7 bombs in one season and used to bat 7th in the Dodger lineup. Six foot six and not afraid to come inside. After you got past him Koufax was next.

Edited to add just acquired 1961 and 1964.

You're not kidding!

I saw him pitch - he was awsome! Plus, due to his long arms - it had a "whip effect" so it was hard for a snap instant to pick up his pitch.

Those are incredible 8s! No need for 9s when they look like that - congratulations on your pickups!

Nice cards. I remember him and his wife on "You bet your life" He looked awfully young. I don't remember if he said the secret word.

Those are very nice cards. I am far too young to have seen either one pitch in person, but I feel Drysdale and Bob Gibson are so undervalued in the card world.

Nice Cards. I never saw him play, but he was one special pitcher.

The only association I have with Mr. Drysdale is that we went to the same high school (Van Nuys High).

I'm too young to remember seeing Bid D pitch, but I grew up in L.A. and had the pleasure of listening to him do Angels and Dodgers broadcasts. He was my favorite announcer and I miss him to this day.

He was a great announcer to be sure, but better than Vinnie? Heresy!
Incredible run of Drysdales- I missed seeing him pitch by 2 years, and Singer and Sutton were poor substitutes for Drysdale & Koufax.
Are you going after the Fleer, Bells and Morrell's after you finish up the Topps run?

They are all sweet.The 58 Drysdale shown below had to be tough to find even at a 7 it is a BEAUTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hotmush I always wondered that too. He was totally dominating in '68- the scoreless inning streak, 8 shutouts, but halfway thru '69 he retired, not even finishing out the season. The Dodgers seriously sucked that year, but knowing the competitor that Drysdale was have to think it was due to a major injury- rotator cuff or something like that. Anyone know for sure?

From his site:

However, he left baseball in 1969, forced to retire early at age 33 because of a torn rotator cuff. "A torn rotator cuff is a cancer for a pitcher," Drysdale said regrettably. "And if a pitcher gets a badly torn one, he has to face the facts, it's all over baby."

Retired too young, died way too young.
I would have loved to see Barry Bonds with his body armour crowd the plate against Drysdale or Gibson.

Me too. Methinks Gibby would've made Bonds' back look like modern art.
