How well do you know your Rated Rookies?

I'm very bored at work today, so I thought I would try to list all of the Donruss Rated Rookies from 87-90, the years I bought and collected most. There were 20 Rated Rookies every year, and I thought I might forget 2 or 3 each year. But I started the list, and didn't get very far before I hit the wall.

Without cheating and looking them up, can you guys remember any of the players I forgot?

  • The very first rated rookies were in 1983, and there were only a few of them and they were notated on the back.

IIRC, the best player in that bunch was Julio Franco

In 1984; the series went to a more prominent place in the set with players such as Ron Darling and Joe Cater being the most known players today

edited to reflect the awesome memories of two board members.

Bald Bull might return sometime in the future. I'm kinda liking Damien Thorn right now.

Maybe Pete Harnisch in the '89 set? Also, I think it's possible that Jeffries was an '88 RR. Was David Wells or Eddie Williams a RR in '87?

Edit to add: Wow, this is actually kind of fun. How about Danny Tartabull in '87? I know he made the cut in '85, but wasn't he the first guy to get the RR tag in two different years?

Jefferies was a regular card in 88, and a RR in 89

David wells was a regular card in 88. I'm thinking Eddie williams was 89...maybe????

Tartabull was a RR in 85 but not in 87. I think he was in 86..maybe???

  • Danny Tartabull is the only player to appear twice (85 & 86) as a Rated Rookie.

He has a '87 Donruss card, but he's not a RR.

BTW, I thought this thread was going to be a link to a Sporcle quiz. image

Was John Habyan (that might be misspelled, I think he was a Cardinal) '87?
  • billwaltonsbeardbillwaltonsbeard Posts: 3,748 ✭✭✭✭
    Marquis Grissom was definitely 90.

    Kalvoski Daniels was 86.

I don't think John Habyan was ever a RR.
  • Nathaniel1960Nathaniel1960 Posts: 2,331 ✭✭✭✭✭
Come to think of it, I think Habyan was 86 too.

Doran should take the top 20 rookies in 81, 82 and 83 Donruss, photoshop the rated rookies logo on them, and do custom cut sig cards.

    How cool would that be?

83 would have to include Franco, Boggs, Sandburg and Gwynn.
